Blog Day : 3564 Post No. : 14287

Today’s song is from the film ‘Kisaan Kanya’ from 1937. This movie is famous for being the first indegenuously made colour film of India, by Ardeshir Irani’s Imperial Film Company. Film pioneer Irani was also the first to make an international co-production, with Italy – the film ‘Nala Damayanti’ – a silent film of 1920. Secondly, and more importantly, he also holds the honour of making and releasing India’s first talkie film ‘Alam Ara’ in 1931. And with film ‘Kisaan Kanya’, he achieved a hat trick of ‘First in India’ credit in film making.

Ardeshir Irani was very keen to become the first to make a talkie film in India. He knew that Madon Theatres of Calcutta too were busy in making their first talkie film, with two popular stars of the day. Irani hastened the speed of his shootings and recordings. Lot of secrecy was maintained in filming the movie. From his secret sources in Calcutta, he was getting information on the progress of Madon Theatres’ film in making. He came to know that their film was to have about 20 songs in the film. Irani decided to limit the number of songs in his film to save on time. Now they would have only 7 songs. Thus he saved on many days of shootings and recordings. His film, ‘Alam Ara’ was released on 14-3-1931. Madon could only release their first talkie film ‘Shirin Farhad’ on 30-5-1931, two and a half months later !

Similarly, Irani studied why Prabhat’s first colour film ‘Sairandhri’ from 1933 failed technically. So when he planned ‘Kisaan Kanya’, he decided to do all technical processes in India. Thus his colour film came out much better than Prabhat’s film. Ashok Raj, in his book ‘Hero-I’, writes the following about Ardeshir Irani.

Irani perhaps was the world’s first multilingual film maker, having made forays into English, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Persian, Burmese, Indonesian and Pushto. He is credited with launching the talkie era in countries like Burma, Indonesia and Iran. He made nearly 120 talkies in a span of just 8 years. He was also the first to establish a colour laboratory imported from Hollywood.

The first song from ‘Kisaan Kanya’ has recently been discussed on our blog, by our Sadanand Kamath ji, so I will not go into its details like story etc. Instead, I will discuss about 3 important persons connected with this film – namely Master Nisar, Padma Devi and Ram Gopal Pande.

Master Nisar was the most popular hero of the early talkie films. He was also one of the most highly paid stars of that era. His popularity was such – it is said that once due to a very large crowd gathered to see him, the Governor of Bengal was forced to divert his car to another road ! When Master Nisar went to Nashik for shooting Bhavnani’s film, he had to be kept closed in a room of his hotel to avoid his fans and hunters from other film companies, who would try to abduct him ! This same person, who enjoyed fame, name, money and fan following once, had to spend his last days in misery, poverty, neglect and pitiable conditions in a one room tenement in a Kamathipura chawl with few aluminum pots and a box full of photographs. During his heydays, he had learnt the art of massaging, as a hobby. This very art came to his help in his last days and he used to work as a masseur and earn few rupees sometimes.

Film historian Isak Mujawar has written in his book ‘Flashback-II’ about several instances of his later years. Here are two of them. When film ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ (1953) was being made, Bimal Roy wanted a masseur for a scene in which the Zamindar (Ulhas) is getting a body massage. Bimal da asked his the then manager Jugal Kishore (who later on became an actor, director and producer) to bring a masseur having solid physique. When Jugal Kishore brought  a very thin, emaciated looking person, Bimal da was very upset. When Jugal Kishore told him that he was Master Nissar, Bimal da was moved and gave him the role.

Those who have seen film ‘Guddi’ (1971), there is a scene in which a lanky, thin person is massaging Om Prakash. Dharmendra tells Guddi, “Do you know who he is ? Master Nissar, one time a great actor who was popular and very rich. Film line is such that riches to rags stories are very common here”. In his final days, Nisar was seen begging on roads.

Nissar Ali Mohammed Ali was born on 5-3-1902 in Delhi. His uncle brought him to Bhopal, when he was 10 year old. Nisar started singing and acting in his uncle’s drama company for Rs. 15 pm. He learnt music from Pt. Betab and Ustaad Jhande Khan. After few roles of girls and heroines, he got a hero’s role in Agha Hashr Kashmiri’s dramas, due to his good looks, fluent Urdu and singing skill.

He joined Madon Theatres for their dramas. When Madon decided to make their drama ‘Shirin Farhad’ into a talkie film, their first choice for hero was Nisar. Jahan Ara Kajjan was called from Bhagalpur, Bihar for the heroine’s role. The pair became very popular. People became mad after Nisar’s songs. The pair proved to be a gold mine They acted in 8 films together. Their songs became a rage all over India.

Master Nisar shifted to Bombay and joined Bhavnani Films at a salary of Rs. 3000 pm, a princely sum in those days. He was the first person in the industry to own a Rolls Royce car. His heroines were many like Padma Devi, Zebunnisa, Bibbo, Haseena, Sardar Akhtar, Kanta etc. He also acted in India’s first home made colour film ‘Kisaan Kanya’ (1937). This was also his last film as a hero. In the wake of the rise of Saigal, Ashok kumar, Surendra etc., in comparison his acting was very theatrical and it paled before the newer heroes. He shifted to character roles after being a hero in 45 films. In all, he appeared in 75 films during his career. The situation came that he would take whatever role came his way.

Master Nisar married 4 times. His first wife served him lovingly till the end. He survived by doing small and sometimes even un-credited roles like extras. He was friendly with Dilip Kumar, so he got small roles in his films. His style suited qawwaalis and he featured in many well known films like ‘Azaad’, ‘Barsat Ki Ek Raat’ etc. He is seen as the on screen lead singer in the qawwaali “Aaj Kyon Hum Se Parda Hai” in the film ‘Sadhna’ (1958). The writer of the qawwaali, Sahir Ludhianvi, came across Master Nisar, begging on the roadside. On recognizing him, he immediately hugged him, and took him to the office of BR Films. He introduced him to BR Chopra, and got him the role.

Nisar was a religious person and performed Namaaz five times a day. He had no bad habits like smoking or drinking or gambling, still he spent life in penury. Being a self respecting person, he never asked for roles from anyone. Born poor, lived rich and died poor. Master Nisar died on 13-7-1980. It is said that his neighbours collected money for his burial.

One of Master Nisar’s heroines was Padma Devi in some films. She was a Bengali actress named Neelima. She made her debut in silent films with ‘Sea God’, a 1931 production from Saroj Films. She acted in about 15 silent films. While moving to the talkie films, she had difficulty with her diction and singing in Hindi language. But she overcame this with grit and determination, and learnt all this. She did all this while working in films like ‘Laal e Yaman’, ‘Kurukshetra’, ‘Prithviraj Sanyogita’ etc. (all films from 1933).

She was introduced to Baburao Patel and in no time they became ‘special friends’. Baburao cast her as a heroine in 4 films in his own Gandharva Cinetone company. She became a part of his office and personal life too. However after Susheela Rani’s entry as Baburao’s secretary, she was pushed first aside and then outside. She returned to Calcutta in 1946 and appeared in many films in character roles. She returned to Bombay in 1961 and was seen in smaller roles in Hindi films till late 1970s. Her last film seems to be in 1979.

The music for ‘Kisaan Kanya’ was composed by Ram Gopal Pande, who was variously credited as RG Pande, Ram Gopal, Ram Gopal Pandey etc. He hailed from UP. After unsuccessfully trying to become a singer, he became assistant to many well known composers and learned their methods. His first break came in 1936 with ‘Matwaali Jogan’ aka ‘A Girl From Lahore’ (directed by K Amarnath). Then he was called by Ardeshir Irani at Imperial Film Company for their first colour film. Master Nisar and Padma Devi’s songs became popular, so he was given two more films viz., ‘Mere Laal’ (1937) and ‘Vasant Bangalee’ (1938).

Then in 1938, came Mother India, ‘Actress Kyon Bani’ (1939), ‘Flying Rani’ (1939), ‘Perfect Man’ (1938), Daughters of India’ (1939) and ‘Chalti Duniya’ (1940). He was then connected with Mohan Pictures and did 10 movies for them. His last film seems to be ‘Angoorbala’ in 1947. He was left behind as his music was stage and drama type only – he did not change his style.

Today’s song is First song of Master Nisar on our blog making a debut as a singer. After hearing his singing, one can get an idea about the public taste in the early 1930s and one wonders how they became so popular. One incident of his popularity – In 1954-55, when Master Nisar was in Coimbtore for shooting of film ‘Azaad’ (1955), he along with others went to the market for shopping. There they met one lady and talk started about songs of early era. She said, “I used to like Master Nisar’s songs, but after he died, I gave up listening to songs.” All were stunned. Then Master Nisar introduced himself to her. She was so pleased that she invited all the visitors from Bombay for a party in Nisar’s honour, with the promise that in return, he had to sing for her!

Let us now enjoy Master Nisar and Padma Devi song from ‘Kisaan Kanya’. It was uploaded by Shalin Bhatt ji only on 16th March 2018. Thanks, Shalin ji.

aisa nagar basaaya
aisa nagar basaaya
jis mein swarg utar kar aaya
jis mein swarg utar kar aaya

aisa nagar basaaya

jahaan subeh ki kirnen aa kar
sona hans barsaayen
yahaan pe pahunche
premi bhanware
amar geet nit gaayen
chahun or sunehri gun paaya hum ne
aisa nagar basaaya
aisa nagar basaaya

is soney ke preet nagar ke
hum donon hain bhikhaari
jab tak suraj chaand rahenge
tab tak preeti hamaari
aisa vardaan hai paaya hum ne
aisa nagar basaaya
aisa nagar basaaya
jis mein swarg utar kar aaya
aisa nagar basaaya
aisa nagar basaaya

Missing Films of 1960s – 65
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Back to hunting in the 1960s once again. ‘Mr Murder’ from 1969 is as rare and obscure as one can think of. This very sweet melody is already published on YouTube, only partially though. I am uploading the more complete version today.

The film ‘Mr Murder’ is produced under the banner of Bundelkhand Films, Bombay and is directed by NA Ansari. The main star cast is listed as Naqi Jahan, Krishan Mehta, Ansari, Chand Usmani, and Rajan Kapoor.

The five songs in this film have been composed by the music director duo of Sonik Omi. Sonik Omi had made their debut as a team three years earlier in 1966, with the musically successful ‘Dulhan Ek Raat Ki’  ‘Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya’ (1966). After that, this film in 1969 is just their fifth outing. The names of Shakeel Badayuni and Qamar Jalaalabaadi are listed as songwriters for this film. This song is written by Shakeel Sb.

The singing voice is that of Asha Bhosle. A very sweet song that should not have become as unknown as it has become. Listen and enjoy.

[Ed Note: Sonik Omi’s first film is ‘Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya’ and not ‘Dulhan Ek Raat Ki’. The correction has been made in the article. Thanks to Satyajit ji for catching the error.]

Song – Hum To Dil Jaan Dono Hi Kho Baithe  (Mr Murder) (1969) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Shakeel Badayuni, MD – Sonik Omi

Lyrics

hum to dil jaan donon hi kho baithe
hum to dil jaan donon hi kho baithe
tujh se aankh kya mili
ke tere ho baithe
hum to dil jaan donon hi kho baithe
hum to dil jaan donon hi kho baithe

ye baharon ka mausam
ye thandi hawa
tujh se pehle mazaa in mein
kuchh bhi na tha
ye baharon ka mausam
ye thandi hawa
tujh se pehle mazaa in mein
kuchh bhi na tha
aaj har cheez mein
ik naya rang hai
pyaar ka dhang hai
tu mere sang hai
hum to dil jaan donon hi kho baithe
hum to dil jaan donon hi kho baithe
tujh se aankh kya mili
ke tere ho baithe
hum to dil jaan donon hi kho baithe
hum to dil jaan donon hi kho baithe

tum mujhe is tarah
mere dilbar miley
jaise ik pyaase panchhi ko saagar miley
tum mujhe is tarah
mere dilbar miley
jaise ik pyaase panchhi ko saagar miley
tum ko paaya to
dil ko khushi mil gayi
zindagi mil gayi
bekhudi mil gayi
hum to dil jaan donon hi kho baithe
hum to dil jaan donon hi kho baithe
tujh se aankh kya mili
ke tere ho baithe
hum to dil jaan donon hi kho baithe

Missing Films of 1960s – 66
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Nightingale of the South – Janakiamma turns 80 today – a grand and a fabulous milestone in of itself. Hearty greetings and best wishes for a very Happy Birthday to her.

Within those eighty years, there lies a sustained joyful journey of musical accomplishments that has lasted for six decades. Last year (2017), she announced her retirement from active singing career – hanging up the microphone after having sung a phenomenal number of songs ( ~ 48,000 by some estimates) in almost 20 different languages.

Sistla Shreerammoorthy Janaki was born this day in 1938 in the village of Pallapatla in Guntur district in what used be part of the Madras Presidency during the British rule. Now, her birthplace lies in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Her musical journey starts very early – at the young age of three, when she started her training under Sree Paidiswamy. A knowledgeable teacher, Sree Paidiswamy strengthened her musical talents and nurtured her interests over the childhood years. When she was in her late teens, her uncle and mentor, Dr. Chandrashekar, advised her to move to Madras (now Chennai) and facilitated her association with the AVM Studios. In 1957, AVM’s music director T. Chalapati Rao, offered Janaki her first break to sing in a Tamil film ‘Vidhiyin Vilayattu’. The Telugu film ‘MLA’ was her second assignment, in which she also acted.

From this first stepping stone, the story of her career is a rising graph, being very soon acknowledged as one of the top playback singers in the film industries of the South. Over the decades, she has worked with almost all the mainstream music directors and has long working relationships with the likes of Illyaraja, GK Venkatesh, MS Vishwanathan, KV Mahadevan, V Kumar, Rajan Nagendra and Shankar Ganesh, amongst many others.

Through the decades of 1960s, 70s and onwards, the list of her popular songs, and the list of awards and honors, is too copious to be covered in a single post. She has won the top National Award for the best female playback singer four times. She was honored with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. And as stated, the list of other regional honors and awards is simply too long.

As I checked through the Geet Kosh, I find that from 1960 to 1980, her name is listed against 38 songs in Hindi films. Of course she continued to sing for Hindi films after 1980 also, just that I am not able to present those numbers.

For today’s celebratory honors, I present this wonderful melody from the 1964 film ‘Jhanda Ooncha Rahe Hamaara’. Not much information is available about the film. The production company is Movie Mandir of Bombay. Names of producer, director and cast of actors, are not available. Geet Kosh has listing of four songs, with the indication that there might be more. The name of the lyricist is indicated as Shrivas, and the music directors are Gandharva-Ghantashala.

Regarding the lyrics, one may find that the words are occasionally set somewhat awkwardly, almost as if forcing them together in a pattern. With some hind sight about songs from Hindi films that were remakes of, or dubbed from South Indian films, I can say that I have seen this pattern recur in some other Hindi films also. The thing is that the producers would try to retain the music of the songs, because they were popular in their original settings. So, in the Hindi remakes or dubbed versions, they would get the lyrics re-written in Hindi, force fitting them to the tune of the original regional language song. Another sampler is the songs of film ‘Baghdad’ of 1961.

On our blog, we have five songs sung by Janakiamma. Four of these are from the decade of 1980s and one is from a film from 1960. Just underscoring what I stated earlier, that she has been active in the Hindi film industry in the later decades also.

With this song, the film ‘Jhanda Ooncha Rahe Hamaara’ makes its debut on our blog today.

And once again, Happy Birthday greetings to Janakiamma, with lots of best wishes for good health and comfort, and wishing many happy returns of this celebration in her life.

Song – Waadi Ka Samaa  (Jhanda Ooncha Rahe Hamaara) (1964) Singer – S Janaki, Lyrics – Shrivas, MD – Gandharva-Ghantasaala

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 67#
———————————————–——————–

On our blog we have a ‘category’ of ‘songs excluded from movie’, and so far, seventy-nine songs have been posted/included in this category of songs. Today I present a song from the movie ‘Kaalaa Pathhar’ (1979), which belongs to this category.

I vaguely remember to have watched this movie in theatre when I must be 11/12 years old. Thereafter just six-seven years back I got its DVD from an online store to enjoy the movie again and revive the nostalgia. But, I was aware of the today’s song many years before, or exactly since 1991 when I got recorded this movie’s songs from the LP record, for my choice compilation of ‘Daag-Deewaar-Kaalaa Pathhar’ songs in a 90 min cassette.

‘Kaalaa Patthar’ was directed by Yash Chopra for his home productions Yashraj Films, Bombay. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 09.08.1979.

Its cast holds a ‘galaxy of stars’ which includes Shashi Kapoor, Rakhi Gulzar, Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Neetu Singh, Parveen Babi, Prem Chopra, Parikshit Sahni, Romesh Sharma and Poonam Dhillon (in special appearance), Manmohan Krishna, Madan Puri, Iftekhar, Satyen Kappu, Yunus Parvez, Geeta Siddharth, Gautam Sarin, Sharat Saxena, Mac Mohan, Sudesh Mahaan, Sudhir Dalvi, Sudha Chopra, Harish, Mohan Sheri, Vikas Anand, Jagdish Raj, Suresh Oberoi, Prem Sagar, Pardesi, Nazeer Kashmiri, Ashok Razdan and many others.

This movie has six songs, penned by Sahir Ludhianvi and composed by Rajesh Roshan. Interesting to note that the background music for this movie is by Salil Chaudhary. Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mahendra Kapoor, Mohd Rafi, Pamela Chopra, S.K. Mahan, and Usha Mangeshkar have given their voices to the songs in this movie.

So far, three songs from this movie have been posted on the blog, and the song being presented today is the fourth song from this movie to appear on our blog. The previous posted song of this movie appeared on the blog on 24.05.2012. Wow. . . six years wait to get to the next song. 🙂

Today’s song is written by Sahir Ludhianvi and thus this is the third song of Sahir Ludhianvi which I am able to share here under the category of ‘songs excluded from movie’, the earlier two being, Kya Tum Wahi Ho – from ‘Mann Ki Aankhen’ (1970) and Ja Ri Behna Jaa Tu Apne Ghar Ja from ‘Trishul’ (1978).

The other Sahir songs which were excluded from movies, and which have been posted on the blog so far are also listed here – Rut Phire Par Din Hamaare – from ‘Pyaasa’ (1957), Yoon Hi Dil Ne Chaaha Tha Rona Rulaanaa – from ‘Dil Hi To Hai’ (1963) and Saajan Bin Neend Naa Aawe – from ‘Munimji’ (1955).

HFGK Vol- V doesn’t mention anything about ‘exclusion’ of this song from the movie. I would request knowledgeable readers to share information if any they have about this song please.

Let us now enjoy the today’s song, which I do like very much. 🙂

Mujhe pyaar ka tohfa de ke. . .

Song – Mujhe Pyaar Ka Tohfa De Ke (Kaala Pathhar) (1979) Singer – Usha Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Sahir Ludhianvi, MD – Rajesh Roshan

Lyrics

mujhe pyaar ka tohfa de ke
tapti baahon mein leke
mujhe pyaar ka tohfa de ke
tapti baahon mein le ke
meri har saans mein pyaas jagaa di
tumne ae kya kiya

he ae

tumne itna uksaaya
dil roke ruk na paaya
tumne itna uksaaya
dil roke ruk na paaya
mere ehsaas mein aag lagaa di
tumne kya kiya

ek chhed thhi wo yunhi si
tum jisko haqeeqat samjhe
ae ae ae ae
jab chhed na thhamne paayi
ham usko mohabbat samjhe
ho o
o o
us chhed ke sadke jaayen
jis chhed se tumko paayen
us chhed ke sadke jaayen
jis chhed se tumko paayen
zaraa si chhed ne baat banaa di
tumne ae kya kiya

dil ik din to jaana thhaa
hamne socha jaane do
ho o o
o o
haaye
is dil ko thhaam ke rakkho
itna na lehraane do
o o
o o
ye dil kab lehraata thha
har ik se katraata thha
ye dil kab lehraata thha
har ik se katraata thha
tumhi ne mel ki raah sujhaa di
tumne kya kiya

o ho ho ho ho
aa aa aa aa
o o o o
aa aa aa aa aa

thhamne do meri dhadkan
aisi bhi kya wahshat hai
ae ae ae ae
hamne apni keh di hai
tum bolo kya niyat hai
ho o
o o
bolun to kaise bolun
dil apna kaise kholun
bolun to kaise bolun
dil apna kaise kholun
mere hothon pe mohar lagaa di
tumne kya kiya

mujhe pyaar ka tohfa de ke
tapti baahon mein le ke
mujhe pyaar ka tohfa de ke
tapti baahon mein le ke
meri har saans mein pyaas jagaa di
tumne ae kya kiya

he ae ae

tumne itna uksaaya
dil roke ruk na paaya
tumne itna uksaaya
dil roke ruk na paaya
mere ehsaas mein aag lagaa di
tumne kya kiya

Today, May 13th, is the remembrance day of the famous Bangla singer, Utpala Sen.

Utpala’s career has primarily been associated with the Bangla cinema. Her participation in Hindi cinema is limited to less than twenty songs in about 11 films, during the years spanning the mid 1940s to mid 1950s. A large portion of her songs in Hindi cinema have been rendered under the music direction of Pankaj Mullick.

Utpala Sen was born on 12th March, 1924, in Dhaka (now in Bangladesh). Her first performance was at the age of 11, when she sang for the Dhaka radio station. In the early 1940s, her family migrated to Calcutta, and she joined the radio station in this city. In 1944, she made her debut in the cinema with the New Theatres film ‘Meri Behen’, and also began her career in Bangla cinema shortly thereafter. She continued to sing for Hindi films till about 1955, after which she concentrated on Bangla cinema only. She passed away this day in 2005, after a prolonged battle with cancer.

The song presented today is a duet from the film ‘Jhoothi Kasmen’ of 1948. This film is directed by a familiar name in Hindi cinema – HS Rawail. He directed this film for his own production company – Rawail Productions. The star cast of this film listed as Ramola, Robin Majumdar, Heeralal, Rooplekha, Sundar, Ridku, Iftikhar, Prem Kumari, and Manorama etc.

The film has 11 songs listed. Names of two songwriters are listed – Jameel Mazhari and GA Chisti. However, the specifics of which writer wrote which songs is not given. Music direction is by GA Chisti. Looking at the cast of actors, since Robin Mazumdar is listed as an actor, it can be safely surmised that he is singing playback for himself. In that case, it appears that this song would have been picturized on Robin Mazumdar and Ramola. Utpala is most likely singing playback for Ramola.

The song is a light hearted exchange of love between two young lovers, proclaiming that they belong to each other for life. A delightful composition that attracts the mind. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Hum Hain Tumhare Ji, Tum Ho Hamare Ji  (Jhoothi Kasmen) (1948) Singer – Utpala Sen, Robin Mazumdar, Lyrics – [Unattributed], MD – GA Chisti

One of his most well known poems. It tells of the in depth vision of this poet’s mind that has explore the sensitivities of the human mind and this existence. He passed away day before yesterday, on a Sunday afternoon. Went in for a post lunch nap, never to rise again – as simple as that. He was 87.

Born as Nandram Das Bairagi on 10th February, 1931, in Rampura village of district Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh, he had a penchant for writings songs and poems right from his teen years. The manner in which he strung together his verses, and then the way in which he presented them, made him a popular poet at kavi sammelans and cultural programs. People were drawn to this very young man whose words of romanticism, and the social and philosophical messaging brought him to limelight quite early in life. Once at such a gathering, the local candidate for an upcoming election anointed him with the name ‘Balkavi’, and this name then became his signature for life. [This episode is attributed to Kailashnath Katju, a candidate belonging to the Congress party.]

The association with this political outfit became stronger as he moved into election politics. In 1968 he was elected to the Madhya Pradesh Assembly. He won again in 1980, and was a minister in the cabinet till 1984. From 1984 to 1989 he was a member of the Lok Sabha. After this, he was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1998 to 2004.

In his heydays, he wrote occasional songs for films, in the decades of 1960s and 1970s. His first film as a songwriter is ‘Gogola’ from 1966. The duet “Zara Keh Do Fizaaon Se Hamen Itna Sataayen Na. . .” became quite popular. Not only had he the ability to write such romantic verses, but also to create such comedy songs as “Bori Bunder Se Borivali, Dekh Li Maine Gali Gali”, also from the same film.  He has written about 40 songs for the following films (as per Geet Kosh listings),

  • Gogola (1966)
  • Do Boond Paani (1971)
  • Reshma Aur Shera (1971)
  • Veer Chhatrsaal (1971)
  • Achhaa Bura (1972)
  • Kshitij (1974)
  • Rani Aur Lalpari (1975)
  • Jaadu Tona (1977)
  • Pal Do Pal Ka Saath (1978)
  • Azaadi Pachchees Baras Ki (UR)
  • Chautha Paalna (UR)
  • Mausam Badla Hai (UR)

His best known and most popular creation is “Tu Chanda Main Chaandni. . .” from ‘Reshma Aur Shera’, that is tuned by Jaidev. In ‘Veer Chhatrasaal’, he worked with SN Tripathi and in ‘Rani Aur Lalpari’, he teamed up with Vasant Desai. His verses from ‘Veer Chhatrasaal’ are poetic gems – “Nimbuwa Pe Aao Mere Ambuba Pe Aao…”, “Gauri Raat Guzaar Do Kar Chakvi Se Baat…”, and “Jaga Rahe Ghanghor Nagaade Bula Rahi Hai Ranbheri…”. His songs in the normal B grade horror film ‘Jaadu Tona’ are way beyond the quality of the film – “Har Sannata Kuchh Kehta Hai, Har Khamoshi Kuchh Gaati Hai. . .” and “Saanwri Saloni Jamna Ka Jeevan, Ganga Ki Umar Paaye Tu. . .”.

Today I present this unusual philosophical song of love from the film ‘Jaadu Tona’ (1977). The music is composed by Hemant Bhosle. The singing voices are of Yesudas and Asha Bhosle. A poignant and curious exchange on the topic of love, that talks not of birds and roses, but tells the tales of silences and the conversations of mind. Well composed in a slow pace for the mood of the song, and equally well rendered by Asha ji and Yesudas.

Bidding goodbye to the poet of simple verses and deep insights. RIP Balkavi Bairaagi ji.

Song – Har Sannaata Kuchh Kehta Hai  (Jaadu Tona) (1977) Singer – Yesudas, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Balkavi Bairaagi, MD – Hemant Bhosle
Yesudas + Asha Bhosle

Lyrics

har sannaata kuchh kehta hai
har khaamoshi kuchh gaati hai
kuchh awaazen aisi bhi hain
jo mann hi mann takraati hain
har sannaata kuchh kehta hai
har khaamoshi kuchh gaati hai
kuchh awaazen aisi bhi hain
jo mann hi mann takraati hain
har sannaata kuchh kehta hai
har khaamoshi kuchh gaati hai

wo sapnon mein bhi aate hain
to khushboo si chhaa jaati hai
us waqt ka aalam kya hoga
jab baahon mein aa jaayenge
andaaz lagaane waale hi
andaaz lagaaya karte hain
aksar gumsum sapne hi
awaaz lagaaya karte hain
har sannaata kuchh kehta hai
har khaamoshi kuchh gaati hai
kuchh awaazen aisi bhi hain
jo mann hi mann takraati hain
har sannaata kuchh kehta hai
har khaamoshi kuchh gaati hai

is aag se jo takraata hai
ye aag usey pee jaati hai
is aag ko jo pee jaata hai
kehte hain khuda ho jaata hai
do chaar gunaahon ki hasrat
chhoti si tamanna maafi ki
insaan hi rehne do mujhko
mujhko na khuda kehlaana hai
jab sannaate kuchh kehte hain
jab khaamoshi kuchh gaati hai
kehte hain khuda ki haalat bhi
kuchh aisi hi ho jaati hai
jab sannaate kuchh kehte hain
jab khaamoshi kuchh gaati hai

Today is the birth anniversary of playback singer Madhubala Jhaveri. She was born this day in 1935.

Madhubala was born into a musically inclined family of renowned artists. Her mother, Smt Hirabai Jhaveri and her aunt Smt Sharmila Margaonkar, were both well known singers, and often performed on All India Radio. Although brought up in an atmosphere of music, she was initially not inclined to pursue it as a career. In fact after her matriculation, she joined the JJ School of Arts, deciding for herself that the devotion and time required for classical music training was not what she wanted. But the fate had planned otherwise. In a chance encounter, music director Hansraj Behl heard her sing in a private gathering, and was immediately attracted to her voice. He was searching for a new voice to sing for him in his upcoming film ‘Apni Izzat’ (1952). He invited her to sing for this film.

Her debut was very impressive, and the industry immediately took notice of her. It is said that at that time, the refrain that was expressed in the media was, that “. . .another Lata has been born”. She had an active singing career during the decade of 1950s, and worked with many mainstream music directors of that era. Her voice was termed as sweet and pleasing, and her diction and articulation was wonderful. However, her voice could not sustain the higher octaves, somewhat limiting her range. Her voice was considered a perfect foil for Talat Mehmood, and she has rendered many memorable duets with him.

Her career faded away in the early 1960s. After a couple of renditions in 1961, we then hear her voice  for one last time in the 1968 film ‘London Express’ (no records available in public domain so far). After being in oblivion for almost four and a half decades, she passed away on Sep 11th in 2013.

The song I have selected for today’s remembrance is a solo from the 1952 film ‘Raajrani Damyanti’. The music is by Avinash Vyas and the words are written by Neelkanth Tiwari.

The film is a mythological offering from the banner of Roopkamal Chitra, Bombay. It is produced by Mahipatrai Shah and Anoop Chand Shah, and is directed by Raje Nene. The main cast of actors includes Nirupa Roy, Trilok Kapoor, Usha Kiran, Vikas, Baby Tabassum, Ratan Kumar, Prakash, Basant Kanse, Shakeela, Shakuntala, Uma Devi, Yashwant Dave, and Ram Singh amongst others.

This song is a lovely expression of a heart in love, inviting the moon and the stars to come and light up the life. The words by Neelkanth Tiwari evoke a very romantic ambience. It is a wonderful pleasure to listen to this song.

There is one word in the second antaraa that I am not able to decipher. I request other readers and friends with keener ears to please help identify the missing word.

Blog Day : 3595 Post No. : 14347

20th May was the 34th remembrance day for Hansraj Behl, the composer emeritus of Hindi films.

In the history of Hindi cinema, only two music directors have had the distinction of being addressed as Master ji. The first one was Ghulam Haider Sb. Hansraj Behl was only the second music director to be so addressed. Maybe one of the reasons is that he always encouraged, mentored and promoted new artists. Many a singers and some music directors were given their debut breaks by him. Asha Bhosle and Madhubala Jhaveri started their singing careers under the baton of Hansraj Behl, and Bulo C Rani worked as assistant with him before getting independent assignments.

As I searched the web for information, I came across this wonderfully detailed piece at apnaarchives.com which lists a number of golden hits that he has composed in the 1940s and 1950s, including some of the seminal hits of singers like Mukesh, Rafi, Lata and others that really helped to build their careers.

For today’s remembrance, I present this lovely song of coming of age and a young heart pining for her lover. The singer of this delightful song from the 1946 film ‘Gwaalan’ is Susheela Rani – a name that may not be entirely unknown to the readers, but also not too familiar though. Regulars will recognize this name as the lady who started off as the secretary to Baburao Patel, the vitriolic editor of the famous film magazine ‘Film India’, and very quickly graduated to be his third wife. A lady of substance and caliber, she was actively involved in managing the publishing process for the magazine, and eventually the entire publishing and business empire of her husband.

As a part of their business run, Baburao Patel produced and directed two films also. The first was ‘Draupadi’ in 1943 and the second was ‘Gwaalan’ in 1946. Susheela Rani played the female lead in both these films, garnering some critical acclaim for her portrayal of the complex role  of ‘Draupadi’.

The other members of the star cast of the film ‘Gwaalan’ include Trilok Kapoor, Bipin Gupta, Madhuri, Sheikh Hasan, Bikram Kapoor, David, Noorjahan, Master Ratan, Shanta Kumari, Nagendra, Pandit Iqbal, Yusuf, Altaf Hussain, and Karan Singh etc. The film has 10 songs, all written by Pt Indra., and the music is by Hansraj Behl. The singing voice is that of Susheela Rani herself, singing her own songs in the film.

A beautiful rendition of a song of love indeed. Listen and enjoy.

[Ed Note: The song is uploaded on YT by our very own Sadanand ji.]

Missing Films of 1960s – 71
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Although into the seventies now, in terms of songs covered in this series, still there is a lot more to cover. Many more films from the 1960s are still waiting for their debut here on our blog.

Today’s film is ‘Sakhi Lutera’ from 1969. As discussed in some earlier post, the word ‘sakhi‘ here is not the Hindi word with the meaning – a lady friend. The word in the film title is an Urdu word that means – generous, munificent, a person who is liberal in giving to others. As you may be already guessing, and rightly so, this film is about the legendary thief Robin Hood, who steals from the rich and distributes to the poor.

In the annals of Hindi films, there are many films made on this legend. There is ‘Sakhi Lutera’ in 1934, then again in 1955 and then this one in 1969. We also have ‘Adventures of Robin Hood’ in 1965 and then ‘Sakhi Robin’ in 1962. There may be more, I have done a quick search to locate these films.

This film is produced under the banner of Shahnaaz Films, Bombay and is directed by Rustom B Irani. The cast of this film is listed as Azad, Tabassum, Hercules, Chandrakala, Sheikh, Jaani Babu, Shakeela Bano Bhopali, Ram Raseela, Habeeb, Sushma, Heeru Anand, Heera Sawant, Malik, Eruch Tarapur, Desai, Pintu, Toto, Haroon, Shafi, Daud, and Muhammad Sandow etc.

Geet Kosh lists 6 songs for this film. All songs are written by Aziz Ghaazi and the music is composed by BN Bali (aka Baldev Nath Bali). This song is sung by Krishna Kalle. On screen we see a very young Tabassum singing this song and trying to woo Azaad, who plays the role of Robin Hood. One of the films for which the video is available in public domain.

Enjoy this lovely song.

Song – Socha Hai Tum Se Pyaar Karun, Kya Khyaal Hai  (Sakhi Lutera) (1969) Singer – Krishna Kalle, Lyrics – Aziz Ghaazi, MD – BN Bal

Lyrics

socha hai tum se pyaar karun
kya khyaal hai
kaho ji
kya khyaal hai
socha hai tum se pyaar karun
kya khyaal hai
kaho ji
kya khyaal hai

dil mein sama ke rehte ho
nazron se door door
ek baar muskura ke idhar
dekh lo huzoor
kadmon pe dil nisaar karun
kya khyaal hai
kaho ji
kya khyaal hai
socha hai tum se pyaar karun
kya khyaal hai
kaho ji
kya khyaal hai

tabeer kya ye sach hai
mohabbat ke khwaab ki
jo kuchh bata rahi hain
nigaahen janaab ki
main in ka aitbaar karun
kya khyaal hai
kaho ji
kya khyaal hai
socha hai tum se pyaar karun
kya khyaal hai
kaho ji
kya khyaal hai

maine to tum ko chaaha sanam
dil aur jaan se
hasrat yahi hai keh do kabhi
tum bhi zubaan se
kab tak ye intezaar karun
kya khyaal hai
kaho ji
kya khyaal hai
socha hai tum se pyaar karun
kya khyaal hai
kaho ji
kya khyaal hai

kaho bhi na. . .

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 9
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘ख’ – खुश कर दिया तूने मेरे रामा

गीत गाता हूँ मैं ॰ ॰ ॰

Yes, surely the Almighty God sent you here amongst us, only for singing and to add to the music on this earth. And what a wonderful treasure you have bequeathed to the lesser mortals of this earth. We shall always be indebted for this tremendous legacy you gave us.

Continuing with Rafi Sb’s duet series after a gap of – goodness, seventy two days. Wow. Anyway, back again with another rollicking duet, this time accompanied by Lata Mangeshkar.

And rollicking is just the word. The setting is Punjabi, the performance is a Punjabi Bhangra dance, and the occasion – one of the most awaited and the most celebrated in Indian families – birth of a male child.

The film is ‘Jeet’ from 1972. The main performers in this group dance song are Randhir Kapoor and Babita. The film being released in 1972, would have been in the making in 1971, the year that this lead pair tied the knot and became a real life couple. Ah but that story for another occasion, another post. Today, we are moving ahead with the duet series of Rafi Sb, getting to the 9th episode in this series, which promises to be long – going thru the entire Devnagri alphabet.

The film is produced under the banner of Babu Movies Combine, and is directed by A Subbarao. Besides the lead pair mentioned above, the other players in the star cast include Rajendra Nath, Rupesh Kumar, Jatin, Nana Palsikar, Anwar Hussain, Jeevan, Sundar, Hari Shivdasani, Dada Mirasi, Keshav Rana, Master Shahid, Heena Kausar, Sanjana, Sulochana Latakar, Manorama, Dulari, and Baby Sudha etc.

The film has six songs, three of which are already showcased on our blog. Goodness, that was 2009, all three songs posted so far. After a gap of nine years, we once again get an opportunity to revisit this film – today’s being the fourth song posted. All songs are written by Anand Bakshi. Music direction is by the duo of Laxmikant Pyaarelal.

On screen, we see a homely set of a village lane with houses lined up close to each other. Randhir and Babita are leading the bhangra dance event, with Sunder also part of the male dance group. In between, we see Dulari holding a baby (well, not looking too much new born, but oh well 🙂 ). There is another lady sitting next to her. I am guessing that she is Sanjana. I request other more knowledgeable readers and friends to please confirm or correct this guess.

The event and the celebration is about the new born child, but quite apparently, the lead pair is spending more lines trying to woo each other and play the romantic love birds. Well in fact, it is just the mukhda lines that talk about the child birth celebrations. The entire verse set for both antaraas is just the romancing between the hero and the heroine. Quite a ‘filmi’ thing, right?

Enjoy this lively bhangra dance song; and I hope to speed up things on this series, let us see. 😉

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 11
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘घ’ – घर वाले घर नहीं, हमें किसी का डर नहीं ॰ ॰ ॰

दिल॰ ॰ ॰  तू भी गा ॰ ॰ ॰

And not just a heart; every heart sang. Every heart sang your songs, every heart sang along. There is that something so naturally attractive in your renditions, that every heart will brim up, and start to sing along. Ah, the magic of your voice. . .

For the next song in this series, I have picked this delightful duet of free spirit fun from the 1959 film ‘Pyaar Ki Raahen’. The film has such wonderful gems like “Tum Se Door Chale. . .” and “Do Roz Mein Wo Pyaar Ka Aalam Guzar Gaya“, already showcased on our blog. And a few more still waiting in the wings. With this post, this film now has four songs added here. And four more are waiting to come on board.

All eight songs of this film are from the pen of Prem Dhawan. And the music. . . wish we had more music to listen to, from this music director. The compositions are from the mind of Kanu Ghosh. Another of the bevy of talented but very less heard music director, and under-utilized by the producers and directors in the industry. Kanu Ghosh has just two films to his name – ‘Naya Zamaana’ from 1957 and this film. One also sees his name appear against one song in the 1953 film ‘Teen Batti Chaar Raasta’. And that is it. Listening to the above mentioned two songs, and then this song, one just wonders why. . .

The film is produced under the banner of Thakur Brothers, Bombay, and is directed by Lekhraj Bhakri. The cast of actors is quite impressive – Pradeep Kumar, Anita Guha, Pran, Jeevan, Tiwari, Kuldip Kaur, Sundar, Chandabai, Ameer Bano, Rajan Kapoor, Ravikant, Ladle, Helen, Om Prakash. With Helen’s name in the cast, one is sure to find at least one more gem of a dance song. Sure enough, there is this Asha Bhosle rendition of “Gori Gori Gori Gori Baahen, Teekhi Teekhi Haaye Ye Nigaahen” waiting to be posted, hopefully soon.

In today’s song Rafi Sb is accompanied by Geeta Dutt. As mentioned, a fun song of free spirit, celebrating the prospect of the lovers having free time to themselves. Wonder what the situation of this song could have been. I request our knowledgeable friends and readers who may have seen this film, to please add more information about the picturization of this song and the film itself.

Quite much a happy-go-lucky song that I am sure you will enjoy.

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 12
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘च’ – चाँदनी छिटकी हुई है मुस्कुराती रात है ॰ ॰ ॰

तुम तो दिल के तार छेड़ कर ॰ ॰ ॰

The songs that you have rendered, the legacy that you have left behind, it strums the strings of the heart and brings unfettered pleasure to the listening mind. The treasure is limitless, and yet limited. Limitless – that we can hear them over and over again, and the listening pleasure multiplies. And yes, limited too – for we know now, what we have is what it is; there will be additions to this treasure no more.

Continuing with this delightful series of duets of Rafi Sb. We skip the ‘ङ’ letter in the alphbet – no meaningful words start with this letter and so no songs starting with it either.

We now come on to the next letter ‘‘. And to this delightful song from almost seven decades back. The film is from 1950 – a time when the companion singer was still known as Geeta Roy. The film is ‘Hamaara Ghar’. A wonderful chhaayageet song which comes from the pen of Anjum. The lyricists name appears as such; most likely this is the same person as Anjum Jaipuri. The melody comes from the mind of Chitragupt, a creator of many an unforgettable track.

The film is produced under the banner of Hindustan Chitra and is directed by Nanabhai Bhatt. The cast of actors is listed as Durga Khote, Umakant, Veera, Agha, Meena Kumari, Geeta Bose, David, Jankidas, Ramesh Gupta, Yashodhara Katju. I cannot with certainty make any guess about the lead pair of the film. I request knowledgeable readers and friends to please add more information about this film and this song.

The film has seven songs, two of which are already showcased here on our blog. Here is the third song from this film. Think 1950, and think melody – the queen. A delightful duet. Enjoy.

Song – Chaandni Chhitki Hui Hai Muskuraati Raat Hai (Hamaara Ghar) (1950) Singer – Geeta Roy, Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Anjum, MD – Chitragupt
Mohammed Rafi + Geeta Dutt

Lyrics

chaandni chhitki hui hai
muskuraati raat hai
chaandni chhitki hui hai
muskuraati raat hai
ek chanda aasmaan par
ik hamaare saath hai
ek chanda aasmaan par
ik hamaare saath hai

tumko kya dekhen sitaaro
tum puraane ho chuke
tumko kya dekhen sitaaro
tum puraane ho chuke
hum to un ko dekhte hain
jo hamaare ho chuke
jo hamaare ho chuke
dil se dil ki baat hai
ek chanda aasmaan par
ik hamaare saath hai

jhoomte hain aaj armaan
hans rahi hai zindagi
jhoomte hain aaj armaan
hans rahi hai zindagi
dil to pehle hi miley the
mil gai taqdeer bhi
mil gai taqdeer bhi
aji haath mein ab haath hai
ek chanda aasmaan par
ik hamaare saath hai

ik naya jeevan hai paaya
ik nai duniya basi
ik naya jeevan hai paaya
ik nai duniya basi
mil gayi hai do dilon ko
saari duniya ki khushi
saari duniya ki khushi
kya niraali baat hai
ek chanda aasmaan par
ik hamaare saath hai

chaandni chhitki hui hai
muskuraati raat hai
ek chanda aasmaan par
ik hamaare saath hai

Your soothing voice is enough to bring a gentle peace to any restless mind. Yes, you would sing and calmness would descend, settling the perturbations of the mind. There was this promise of some divine massage that would heal the disturbances. Alas, just the recordings remain. . . a poor semblance of the real.

‘Madan Manjari’ from 1961 is promising treasure of wonderful music that came from the mind of Sardar Malik. Three gems of this film are already showcased here on our blog. Today, I bring on this fourth treasure, as the next episode in this series of duets of Rafi Sb.

This is a stunt film directed by Jasubhai Trivedi for the banner of Mukund Pictures of Bombay. All eight songs of this film are written by Hasrat Jaipuri, and are tuned to music by Sardar Malik. The cast of actors is listed as Nalini Chonkar, Manhar Desai, Kammo, Sundar, BM Vyas, Naseem, Tuntun, Shekhar Purohit, Meena, Amarjeet, Ajeet, Anil Kumar, CL Singh, Anwari, Premi, BR Ramchandran, Premlata, Champaklala, and Niranjan Sharma etc.

The voice accompanying Rafi Sb is Kamal Barot. Quite a coincidence that the same pair of voices is also present in the previous song posted (part of the Missing 1960s series). The presentation of this song is very fast paced, and the somewhat less than perfect quality of the sound recording of this presentation, makes it sound somewhat higher pitched than expected.

But a lovely song nonetheless. Enjoy.

Missing Films of 1960s – 74
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

In 1940, a film by the name ‘Thief Of Tatar’ was released. Then in 1955 came another film titled ‘Tatar Ka Chor’. And after another 13 years, in 1968, came the film ‘Tatar Ki Haseena’. Just like the ‘Alibaba’ of Arbian Nights and the ‘Thief Of Baghdad’, the Tatar subject also seemed to hold a special interest for Hindi film makers for some time.

The name Tatar applies to an ethnic community of people, originating from the mountains of Mongolia. Originally, these people formed nomadic tribes that moved westward from the Mongol region and over the centuries, spread out all the way to Central Asia and Eastern Europe. The name Tatar first appeared in the 5th century AD. Tatars are essentially different from Mongols; however historically, they have moved together across the Asian continent. The Tatar tribes accompanied Genghis Khan on his conquest of the central and south Asian territories. They mingled with the tribes of the Central Asia and the Turkish people. For a period of history they formed kingdoms and empires in the regions that are now known as the Central Asian republics. In fact, there continues to be a Republic of Tatarstan as part of the current Russian Federation. Currently, about 6.5 million people spreading from Mongolia, China and Siberia in the east, all the way to Poland and Slovakia in the west, claim Tatar roots and ethnicity.

Just like Genghis Khan, Taimur and Halaku (grandson of Genghis Khan) – the Mongol kings and warriors who became legends that have fascinated the historians and the literati, the stories of the Tatar tribes have held the same romanticism and their legends, tales and histories abound in the Central Asia. And thus, the interest of Hindi film makers and the production of films listed above.

Today, I introduce the 1968 film ‘Tatar Ki Haseena’ on our blog. The film is a costume drama produced under the banner of Daluat Productions and is directed by Aslam Allahbaadi. The cast of actors is listed as Nalini Chonkar, Shah Agha, Sherry, Murad, Preetam, Radhika, Heera Sawant, Jeevankala, Madhumati, Kumud Tripathi, Sadiq, Maqbool, Prince Arjun, Babu Rajpal, Siddi Baba, Anil, Vijay, Meena, Sarosh, Kiran, Raju, and Santosh etc.

The Geet Kosh lists 6 songs for this film, five of which are written by Aslam Allahbaadi and one by M Yusuf. Music direction is by S Kishan. It seems that this probably is the solitary film that Aslam Allahbaadi wrote for. Another name, simply as Aslam appears in the Geet Kosh listings but whether it is the same as the lyricist of this film, is not known definitely. S Kishan as a music director is known to the readers of this blog. He has about a dozen films to his credit in the 1960s and 70s, including four which remained unreleased. Four of his films are already represented on our blog.

Today’s selection from this film is rendered by Suman Kalyanpur. The music is a reminder of the Middle Eastern melodies. The song is an assertion of love. The protagonist, a lady, is addressing her lover, telling about the feelings of her heart – that she would readily give up her life even for him, that she is restrained and helpless and is seeking solace in his benefaction.

Only the audio of this song is available. I request other readers and friends who may have seen this film in its time, to kindly add more information about this film and this song.

‘Tatar Ki Haseena’ makes a debut on our blog today, with this song. Listen to this poignant rendition, and enjoy.

Lyrics

ho gayi tum se mohabbat jaan bhi qurbaan hai
tu mera mehboob hai
tu hi mera imaan hai
ho gayi tum se mohabbat jaan bhi qurbaan hai
jaan bhi qurbaan hai

dil ke haathon aaj main majboor hoon
paas reh kar bhi main tujh se door hoon
dil ke haathon aaj main majboor hoon
aaa aaa aaaa aaa
paas reh kar bhi main tujh se door hoon
aaa aaa aaaa aaa
ishq mein mar mar ke jeena aashiqon ki shaan hai
tu mera mehboob hai
tu hi mera imaan hai
ho gayi tum se mohabbat jaan bhi qurbaan hai
jaan bhi qurbaan hai

aap ki nazr e inaayat mujh pe gar ho jaayegi
zindagi araam se meri basar ho jaayegi
aap ki nazr e inaayat mujh pe gar ho jaayegi
zindagi araam se meri basar ho jaayegi
dil mein mere bas yahi ik aakhiri armaan hai
ho gayi tum se mohabbat jaan bhi qurbaan hai
jaan bhi qurbaan hai

dil dhadakta hai mera bas aap ke aa jaane se
dil dhadakta hai mera
shamma bhi jal jaati hai parwaane ke jal jaane se
shamma bhi jal jaati hai
dil dhadakta hai mera bas aap ke aa jaane se
shamma bhi jal jaati hai parwaane ke jal jaane se
bewafaa tujh par nichhaawar aaj meri jaan hai
tu mera mehboob hai
tu hi mera imaan hai
ho gayi tum se mohabbat jaan bhi qurbaan hai

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 14
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Looking at the title line, I am tempted to start searching for songs which are built around the theme of the clock and  time on the clock. Yes, there are a few songs that come to mind, but then likely many of them are probably already here on the blog. Let me see.

Coming to the next letter in the alphabet for this series. The song that I have selected is a duet of Rafi Sb and Suman Kalyanpur from the film ‘Gambler’. Not, this is not the 1971 Dev Sb starer, but an obscure and forgotten film from 1960. One song of this film is posted on the blog in July 2013. Close to five years now, that we are getting to revisit this film and add to its counter.

When I look at the detailed credits of this film, I am a bit surprised that this film is obscure and unfamiliar. The banner name is Vikas Productions from Bombay. More important, the producers of this film are Ram Kamlani and Dwarka Khosla, the latter being also the director of this film.

The star cast is quite, rather very impressive, for it includes Premnath, Shakeela, Agha, Poornima, Pran, KN Singh, Shammi, Madan Puri, Kanchanmala, Kukku, Mridula, Raja Amrohi, Jai Kumar, Meena, Ram Kamlani. Hmmm, a Premnath and Shakeela starrer in the late 1950s. . . should have been a better known film.

Anyway, seven songs listed. All songs from the pen of Prem Dhawan and music by Chitragupt, assisted by Dilip Dholakia. The song itself has a peculiar signature – a long pause of silence in the middle of the last word in last lines of the mukhda and the antaraas. I can’t recall a similar tune design for a song in Hindi films.

The song is a ‘nok-jhonk’ song – the gentleman says something to offend the lady to start with, she complains about it, he retracts and apologizes, and then all is well once again. And the planned tryst at 4 O’Clock is very much on. The pause becomes so noticeable, as the rest of song is quite fast paced. As I said, a peculiar tune design experimented by Chitragupt. A fun song, I am sure you will enjoy.

Song – Jab Ghadi Bole Chaar Gori Kar Ke Singaar  (Gambler) (1960) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics – Prem Dhawan, MD – Chitragupt
Mohammed Rafi + Suman Kalyanpur

Lyrics

jab ghadi bole chaar
gori kar ke singaar
chali aana us paar
bolo pa. . . .kki
sainyaan karo aitbaar
main hoon aisi hoshiyaar
jab baje paune chaar
aaun na. . . .kki
jab ghadi bole chaa..aar

kehti paune chaar hai
par aati saade saat hai
arre kehti paune chaar hai
par aati saade saat hai
boley bhi to kya boley
tu aurat ki zaat hai
oo oo oo oo
karey ulti ulti baat
karey ulti ulti baat
kahey din ko bhi raat
ja na bolun tere saath
tu hai jha. . . .kki
jab ghadi bole chaar
gori kar ke singaar
chali aana us paar
bolo pa. . . .kki
jab ghadi bole chaar

khoti kar ke taalna
bas tera to ye kaam hai
tu kya jaane pyaar bhi
kis chidiya ka naam hai
oo oo oo oo
meri baaten nahin khel
o meri baaten nahin khel
sachcha hai ye dil ka mel
teri khaatir jaaun jail
peesoon cha. . . .kki
sainyaan karo aitbaar
main hoon aisi hoshiyaar
jab baje paune chaar
aaun na. . . .kki
jab ghadi bole chaa..aa..aar

yun na khota jaan ri tu
hum mardon ki baat ko
haan samjhi
yun na khota jaan ri tu
hum mardon ki baat ko
tu boley to aaun main
paidal aadhi raat ko
oo oo oo oo
achha maani teri baat
thank you
achha maani teri baat
to phir de haathon mein haath
hoga tera mera saath
bada lu. . . .ckky
jab ghadi bole chaar
gori kar ke singaar

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 15
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘झ’ – झुक के ज़मीन चूम रहा आसमान ॰ ॰ ॰

बस्ती बस्ती पर्वत पर्वत गाता जाये बंजारा  ॰ ॰ ॰

Over the hills and through the valleys; on lonely roads and barren deserts; be it crowded cities or a lonely boatman – there is always a song, and your voice with it, don’t have to search far. . .

– – – – –

What a gem of discovery this song is. I can’t recall having heard it earlier. The film is ‘Dhoop Chhaaon’ from 1954. The film itself is not so unfamiliar – three songs of this film are already showcased on our blog. Although of course it is lesser known than its more famous same name predecessor from 1935. Btw, there is another film by the same name in 1977 also.

But this song – such a melodious creation it is, and a surprise that it has remained obscure for such a long time.

The 1954 ‘Dhoop Chhaaon’ is produced by MO Suhel for the banner of Suhel Art Productions, Bombay and is directed by SM Raza. Geet Kosh lists 9 songs for this film, all composed by Aziz Hindi. Four song writers are listed – Manohar Khanna, Jaan Nisar Akhtar, Arshi Ajmeri and Khaawar Zamaa. This song is from the pen of Jaan Nisar Akhtar. An interesting aside, the name of assistant music director is listed as Madan Sachdev. I wonder if this is the same person as S Madan, who gave music for the 1960 film ‘Batwaara’. I request other knowledgeable friends and readers to please comment on this observation.

The star cast is listed as Shyama, Bharat Bhushan, Agha, NA Ansari, Krishna Kumari, Shameem, Mumtaz, Maqbool, A Roshan, Ahmed, and S Nazeer. And I just recalled something, and confirmed with the anniversaries list. 12 June, that is this past Tuesday, was the birth anniversary of Shyama. And yesterday, 14th June, was the birth anniversary of Bharat Bhushan. Given that they are the lead pair in this film, it is more than likely that this duet song is picturized on them. Earlier this week I was thinking of doing a post on Shyama, but could not get to it. This song turns out to be a bonus in that respect, reviving the memories of these two stalwart artists of Hindi cinema.

A lovely melodious song that is seems to have missed the attention of music lovers. Since I traced out this song on YT, I have heard it many times and simply do not seem to be getting over it. I am sure you will enjoy too.

Song – Jhuk Ke Zameen Choom Raha Aasmaan  (Dhoop Chhaaon) (1954) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Jaan Nisar Akhtar, MD – Aziz Hindi
Mohammed Rafi + Asha Bhosle

Lyrics

aaa aaaaaa
aaaaaa aaaa aaaaaaaaa
aaaaa aaaaaaaa aaaa aa

jhuk ke zameen choom raha aasmaan
aaj galey mil rahe dono jahaan
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
jhuk ke zameen choom raha aasmaan
aaj galey mil rahe dono jahaan
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna

dekho sajan kaisi har shai pe khushi chhaayee hai
baat mohabbat ki ban aayi hai
aaj miley do dil
milne ki ghadi aayi hai
kaisi haseen aaj ki tanhaai hai
jhoom raha kab se umangi samaan
choom rahi phool ka munh titliaan
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
jhuk ke zameen choom raha aasmaan
aaj galey mil rahe dono jahaan
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna

nazron mein lehren hain
haathon mein tera haath hai
mera jahaan aaj mere saath hai
kitni jawaan kaisi rangeen mulaqaat hai
saath mein armaanon ki baraat hai
kehti huin pyaar bhari daastaan
beh rahin saagar ki taraf naddiyaan
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
jhuk ke zameen choom raha aasmaan
aaj galey mil rahe dono jahaan
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna
phir kyon na milen kyon na hum saajna

Today’s episode features a wonderful breezy duet from the 1959 film ‘Naach Ghar’. This film is a social drama produced and directed by TS Tara, for the banner of Quality Pictures, Bombay. As the name suggests, the film has a theme that is built around a stage dance group, i.e. a nautanki group. It involves characters for whom dance and music is the drive in life; it also has others who would like to usurp and manipulate these passions for their own advantage; and then there are good hearted people who want to bring happiness to all. The cast of actors is very impressive – Ashok Kumar, Shobha Khote, Gopikrishan, Helen, Kamla Lakshman, Anoop Kumar, Dhumal, Iftikhar, Maya Das, Mirza Musharraf, Jamaal, Sujata, Bismillah, and Vivek.

As I check for details online, I come across a poster that shows Helen dancing in accompaniment with Gopi Krishan. Now this should be a veritable treat to watch – Helen dancing with an acknowledged master of classical dance. One of the websites https://bombaymann2.blogspot.com/ has reproduced a brief introduction of the film from the information booklet of the film, as below,

The whole worlds a stage – a Naachgar. Its impossible to tell its whole story in a small space like this. But we are glad here to introduce a few interesting characters whose strange doings give this story its fasicnation. . Radha: A simple village maiden who is in love with Mohan and eventually effaces herself in order that Mohan should be happy. . Mohan: A simple village youth, struck first by paralysis and then by a Raja’s bullet. He is dazzled by city life and, forsaking Radha, develops a strong infatuation for Renu, a city dancer. . Mohini: A young girl, orphaned by a storm. She finds her way into a Nautanki troupe and daydreams of happiness with Gopi, its organiser. But fate having decreed otherwise, she is ultimately forced into a Naachghar – away from her sweetheart. . Gopi: A Nautanki dancer, whose art show brilliantly in partnership with Mohini. They get lost to each other in the maze of city life – and take any knocks from fate in the process. . Shekhar: An opportunist, money-crazy couttier of the Raja of a state, who was the main barrier between Radha and Mohan and Gopi and Mohini. The only man he feared was Bihari. . Bihari: Orginally a guide in shikar-forest, he became the principal aide to the Raja Saheb and his chief confidant. . Raja Saheb: A large-hearted chief of a large state, who wanted to see everyone happy and prosperous. [Source: Booklet]

Geet Kosh lists 10 songs for this musical – all songs are created by the team of Sahir Ludhianvi and N Datta. The count of songs is like – one Rafi Sb solo, three Lata solos, four Rafi-Lata duets, and then one duet of Rafi Sb each with Asha and Geeta. Way back in September 2012, two songs of this film were posted in quick succession. Three more songs have followed in the interim. Today we get to the sixth song of this film. All songs are quite a treasure, and I hope the remaining songs will find their place on this blog shortly.

This song is one of the Rafi-Lata duets – kind of a teasing song, where in the lady requests not to be teased in public, and the gentleman wraps it up by stating that one should be open with one’s feelings – “दुनिया का डर क्या”.

A remarkable configuration of singing lines; the first two antaraas are all by Lata, with Rafi Sb making an appearance in the third. As the song progressed, I was almost thinking whether some error had been made and this was another solo. But then Rafi Sb’s voice appeared in the third antaraa. . . 🙂

Enjoy this quick paced and breeze tête-à-tête between lovers.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Maata’ aka ‘The Mother’ (1942). Not many people know about this film. Made by Kirti films, it was a social film, directed by Dada Gunjal. Music was composed by Vasant Kumar Naidu, for the lyrics by DN Madhok. The cast of the film was Shobhana Samarth, Chandrakant, Mubarak, A. Himalaywala, Urmila Devi, Bhudo Advani, Moti, Bibi Bai, Munshi Khanjar, Suraiya Begum etc.

Chandrakant is a name which appears for a very few films as an actor. In fact, he acted in only 2 films. The other film was ‘Maharathi Karna’ (1944) (he had a small role). Chandrakant Gaur was born in UP in 1929. He was an educated person and knew many languages like Marathi, Gujarati and Punjabi, in addition to Hindi and English. He was a quick learner and a good writer. He came to Bombay to become a director. Instead of that he started as an actor in ‘Maata’.

During the shooting of ‘Maharathi Karna’, Bhalji Pendharkar spotted this young man’s talents and took him to Kolhapur as his assistant. Chandrakant, being a fast learner, became adept at direction. He came back to Bombay and hurriedly directed his first film – ‘Riding Hero’ (1951), a stunt film made by Laxmi Productions of Chimanlal Trivedi. After this, he directed 29 Hindi films, mostly B grade, stunt/action films only.

He also directed a Hit Punjabi film ‘Bhagat Dhanna Jaat’ (1974). According to indiancine.ma, this film is said to have revived Punjabi film industry. He did some Gujarati mythologicals and Marathi films too. Together his tally goes to 45 films. In between he became famous for writing stories of films like ‘Patita’ (1953), ‘Seema’ (1955), ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’ (1957), ‘Kathputali’ (1957), ‘Anita’ (1967) and ‘Mahasati Savitri’ (1973).

From the cast listing, another interesting name is that of A Himalaywala. His name was Mohd Afzaluddin. He was born in March 1916, at Dehradun. After school education he joined his brother, Mohd Misaluddin’s firm – The Himalaya Drug Company, a leading Pharma company of repute (even today). He worked there for 10 years and after a dispute with his brother, left the company. He came to Bombay to join films.

First he had thought of starting a company, but looking at the situation, he decided to do acting only. His first film was ‘Kiski Biwi’ (1942), directed by MA Mirza. His name was changed from Afzal to A Himalaywala (since he came from the Himalayan town of Dehradun, like Kashmiri from Kashmir), by Shaukat Hussain, husband of Noorjehan. However in many films he was credited as Afzal only. He worked in few films like, ‘Vishwaas’ (1943), ‘Ankh Ki Sharm’ (1943), ‘Dost’ (1944), ‘Kismatwaala’ (1944), ‘Zeenat’ (1945), ‘Humayun’ (1945), ‘Nal Damayanti’ (1945), ‘Jagbeeti’ (1946), ‘Samrat Ashok’ (1947) and ‘Elaan’ (1947).

He was an outspoken and straightforward person, fond of hunting, football and travelling by car. He toured all of India twice in his car. In 1943, he married actress singer Amirbai Karnataki. After marriage he banned her from acting in films. Within 2-3 years, on this and other issues, they could not get along. He used to hit her and take all her money. At last, it was rumoured that he gave her talaaq after taking 2 lakh rupees and her car. Even after this he was stalking her. She stayed with her elder sister Ahilya Bai. Then one day, she was kidnapped by Himalaywala, from the recording room. She was kept locked in a room and beaten daily. She somehow managed to inform this to her sister.

Ahilyabai then got in touch with her acquaintance Mr Rasiklal Vyas and his brother Chhailabhai Vyas – one of the best criminal lawyers of Bombay. With their political and social connections, they forced the police to register an FIR, which was refused due to Himalaywala’s bribe. Meanwhile Himalaywala was alerted by his cronies. Within few hours Amirbai was escorted back to her sister’s place, by Himalaywala. All this episode is described in full details in the book ‘Aap Ki Parchhaiyaan’, by Rajnikumar Pandya ji. Amirbai later married Gujarati Journalist Badri Kaanchwala.

After partition, Himalaywala migrated to Pakistan. There the lady luck smiled on him and he did very well. He became successful as an actor and was famous also. His role of Akbar in film ‘Anarkali’ (1957) was particularly appreciated very much. Mohd Afzuluddin Himalaywala died in 1984 in Lahore.

The director of this film was V.M. aka Dada Gunjal, who started his career by directing his first film, ‘Bhakt Ke Bhagwan’ (1934). He went on to direct 38 films in Hindi and Marathi. His last film was ‘Ek Armaan Mera’ (1959). Dada Gunjal was born in Bombay on 25-1-1904 and died also at Bombay on 6-11-1968.

The music director for this film was a less known composer, Vasant Kumar Naidu. He was  born in 1915. His family had settled in Burma like thousands of other South Indian families.  When Burma was struggling for independence, in the 1930s, most Indians left Burma and came to India. Many went to Calcutta and many went to South India. Many families walked for around 6 months from Burma to India.  Vasant Kumar’s family was one among them.  They walked from Rangoon to Madras.  The family settled in Madras for some years.

Vasant Kumar Naidu had come alone to Bombay earlier in search of a career in music. He was an instrumentalist and could play any string instruments and also harmonium. He was also very much interested in reading different languages. There were many books that he read. He was also very keen in dressing up and had several suits in those days. He joined the film industry and started getting established as a music director.  He then called his mother and other siblings to live with him in Bombay along with his eldest brother’s widow and her son. He had 4 brothers. His eldest brother expired in Madras itself. Vasant Kumar was the second eldest. He had two younger brothers as well.  They all lived on Peddar Road. He left his Peddar Road flat and moved to Parel. He lived in Parel until his death on 16-10-1951.

Vasant Kumar got married in Madras. This marriage was a proposed marriage arranged by his mother. Eventually his other brothers also got married. All three brothers and their wives stayed under the same roof in Parel in a joint family which was headed and supported monetarily by Vasant Kumar.  His younger brother Pandurang Naidu was also picking up in music career. He became a musician (he played banjo and mandolin). Vasant Kumar taught several string instruments to him. His youngest brother, Sreenivasan Naidu, in the later part of his life became music composer for Indian Railway Music Academy (Central Railway Cultural Academy).

Vasant Kumar is survived by his only daughter, Pramila Naidu, who is a widow now. She lives in Pune with her grown up children. Pramila Naidu was around 5 years old when her father expired.  She has a vague memory of her father. It’s sad to see her struggling now financially. She still gives tuition at the age of 70 to make her living. She lawfully owns all these 3 flats in Parel, Mumbai but the 3rd generation of the family has occupied these flats and are not willing to vacate the property. This property is now worth in crores. The cousins of Pramila Naidu got together and filed a law suit against these 3rd generation greedy family members. The law suit is going on now for the past 3 years.

Vasant Kumar started his career in 1939 by giving music to film ‘Thunder’ (1939) and ‘Pakke Badmash’ (1939). Till 1947, he gave music to 22 films, as per the HFGK entries. He composed 160 songs in these 22 films. He is variously mentioned as Vasant, Vasant Kumar and VK Naidu, in addition to his name Vasant Kumar Naidu. He sang 1 song, a duet with Khan Mastana for film ‘Mere Sajan’ (1941).

His filmography is,

  • Thunder (1939)
  • Pukke Badmash (1939)
  • Rangeela Jawan (1940)
  • Jung-e-Azadi (1940)
  • Desh Bhakta (1940)
  • Suhana Geet (1941)
  • Meri Khwaish (1941)
  • Mere Saajan (1941)
  • Lehri Jawan (1941)
  • Lalaji (1942),
  • Call of youth (1942)
  • Mata (1942)
  • Watan ki Pukar (1943)
  • Nai zindgi (1943)
  • Mohabbat ki jeet (1943)
  • Daawat (1943)
  • Circus Girl (1943)
  • Bhagta Bhoot (1943)
  • Beda Paar (1944)
  • Shahi Khazana (1946)
  • Chamkati Bijli (1946)
  • Toote Di (1947)

Unfortunately, Vasant Kumar got mostly B and C stunt and action films for composing the music. Big banners like National Studios gave him an opportunity with film ‘Lalaji’ (1942), in which Naidu got many songs sung by Anil Biswas, Kusum Mantri, and Vatsala Kumthekar. However such films came to him only as an exception, therefore his exposure to audience was limited and his name did not gain any fame. Actually, many big, well known and popular singers sang for Naidu.

However, without a mentor, Godfather or the support of a big banner, it became impossible for Vasant Kumar to grow further. During the transition period of 1947-48, when many composers migrated to Pakistan, the existing big composers made their positions solid. Thus smaller composers never got any opportunity to benefit from the void created by the exit of composers. This was the case of many small time composers like Vasant Kumar.

The film ‘Maata’ has 7 songs. I have heard 6 of them and feel, he could have done better than this. The selected song is a better one from the lot. The singer’s name is not available. The film makes its debut on the blog.

# The Special Voices of the Decade (1971-1980) – 4 # Nitin Mukesh #
———————————————–———————————–——————

Welcome all to this fourth article in this series where we are discussing the ‘special voices of the seventies’ and the nostalgia and memories associated with the songs of these ‘special voices’ from Hindi Movies.

As Gulzar Sahab has said in one of his famous albums. . .

door kahin jab wo pahaad ka tilaa baadlon se dhhak jaata tha
to ek aawaaz sunaayi deti

Zaahir si baat hain ki umr ke jis padaav par aap honge, aur jo yaadein aapke zehan mein bas gayin hongi, aap ko bhi kuchh aawaazein sunaayi deti hongi, aur ho sakta hai unka andaaz shaayad kuchh alag sa hota hoga, jaise ki mujhe lagta hai ki ye aawaaz. . .

Noorie. . .     Noorie. . .

Lekin ye aawaaz to mere dil ki gehraaiyon mein tab se hi utar gayi thi. . .

Since, and so far, I vaguely remember to have heard this song playing on the radio in home and too on a dark rainy night. Maybe I was in half sleep when this song was playing on radio. Even today whenever I get to listen to this song, I have the same nostalgic feeling always

teri jheel si gehri aankhon mein
kuchh dekha hamne, kya dekha

May be that time I didn’t even have this knowledge of who was singing but as I grew up and this voice also grew up over the years leaving behind very few yet unforgettable gems in the history of HFM. The most popular of them all, I think, must be this,

zindagi kin aa toote ladi ee
pyaar kar le ghadi do ghadi

Yes!! Today we are discussing Nitin Mukesh under this series of ‘Special Voices’. As I took this journey through his biography and filmography (or discography), as usual, I am filled with ‘nostalgia’ and the years and those songs which brings back many memories. Maybe he has sung very less songs in numbers but almost all of them are so special and unique that one cannot forget them easily.

Nitin Mukesh was born on 27th June, 1950, to a celebrity father who by then had established himself in HFM. There were days he saw his father struggling and they didn’t have enough money to pay even his school fees. And on the other hand, Mukesh, who unlike him wanted that his children get good higher education, sent Nitin to the London School of Economics. However, like his father Nitin was also not interested and not good in studies and hence requested his father to allow him to come back home and leave studies and pursue singing. There after Nitin used to accompany his father on all of his musical tours and stage programmes. He was doing this since he was nine.

As his father Mukesh used sing his own songs in these programmes he asked his son that he should sing other singers’ or specifically Rafi Saab’s songs. Nitin Mukesh remembering this has talked about how great his father was and how much both of them respect and loved Rafi Saab’s singing. It is said that Raj Kapoor wanted that Mukesh’s son should sing a song for his son Rishi in the movie ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970) and so Nitin had given his voice for Rishi Kapoor in this song.

Earlier Nitin Mukesh was mainly interested in singing and doing stage programmes only, however on insistence from his father he took on to singing in his movies and thus make a debut in singing with this song from ‘Dhuen Ki Lakeer’ (1974), a duet with Vani Jairam,

teri jheel si gehri aankhon mein
kuchh dekha hamne, kya dekha

Moving forward with Gaapoochi Gaapoochi Gam Gam’ (‘Trishul’, 1978) and ‘Wo Aurat hai tu mehbooba’ from ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ also of 1978. And reaching the popular heights with Zindagi ki naa toote ladi’ in ‘Kranti’ (1981). He continued the same magic with two songs from the movie ‘Nakhuda-1981’ of which “Suno Ik Baat Bolen” is already posted on the blog. After that very few playback songs, as I think he mainly got involved with doing stage shows only and singing ‘bhajans’.

During those years I was in Kota (Rajasthan) and I had bought his album on cassette, ‘Nehanjali’ by HMV which had ‘bhajans’ composed by Shekhar Sen. This album was released in 5/89 and it was added to my collection on 28.10.1989 (may be around ‘Diwali’ festival, if I am correct).

However the songs of ‘Eeshwar’ (1989) especially “Ram ji Ne Dhanush Toda”  and one song in particular from the movie ‘Clerk’ (1989) – “Rakh Gita Par Haath”, are those which were quite good and were appreciated well, with ‘Ye Paisa Bolta Hai” from ‘Kaala Baazaar’ being the most popular. Other favorites that I want to list are – “Tu Mujhe Suna Main Tujhe Sunaaun’ from ‘Chaandni’ (1989), and ‘So Gaya Ye Jahaan’  topping the popularity charts in the previous year of 1988. Among his other songs I like ‘Zindagi Ka Naam Dosti’ from ‘Khudgarz’ (1987}, and “Dil Ne Dil Se Kya Kahaa” from ‘Aaina’ (1993). However, as said earlier Nitin Mukesh had been continuing with his stage shows, and we can find the details of his latest tours on his website here.

On our blog so far, we have only four of Nitin Mukesh songs (all duets) posted. Out of the many of his songs that are yet to make it on the blog, and taking a ‘liberty’ for this series I have selected a song not from the decade of 1971-80 but, for this today’s post I have selected a ‘very special and lovely song’ from a 1989 movie, for this today’s special day too. This is a song from the 1989 movie ‘Santosh’, which is also making a debut on the blog today.

This song was lying dormant in my memory and got revived in 2010-2011, after many years, during a discussion with a friend.

Thereafter, when I joined this blog as a ‘lyrics contributor’ I had shared this song with Atul ji in 2012. In fact, thereafter I have shared all the songs of this movie with him. However they are yet to be posted. It is opportune that Nitin Mukesh’s birth anniversary is on 27th June’ which incidentally is a ‘special day’ for me too. 🙂

‘Santosh-1989’ was an East-n-West Movies presentation. It was produced and directed by Balbir Wadhawan. Hansraj Wadhawan was the production controller of this movie. The star cast includes Manoj Kumar, Rakhee, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Prem Chopra, Nirupa Roy, Kamini Kaushal, Amjad Khan, Madan Puri, Sarika, Abhi Bhattacharya, Krishna Dhawan, Pichoo Kapoor, Om Shivpuri, Praveen Kumar and others. The story of this film was written by Kaushal Bharti. Editing of this movie was done by VV Kamat, assisted by Ashok Naik. Cinematography was done by Radian Kinagi. Lyrics of this movie were written by Santosh Anand and Manoj Kumar. Music was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. The film Was passed by Censor board on 28.02.1989.

A brief about this movie from IMDB is reproduced here below;

Cold-hearted and manipulative Kamla has fallen in love with a poor man and marries him and has a child named Santosh. She soon realizes that life is not fun living in poverty, and abandons her child and husband, and returns back to her father and his wealth. She re-marries millionaire Kailashpathi, and has a child named Kundan from him. Years pass by, Kundan and Santosh have both grown up. Kundan is the owner of the mill with his mom, while Santosh is a struggling mill worker, and a union leader. A confrontation ensues between the mill and the workers, and Kamla is able to negotiate a settlement and get the workers back to work. But then, she fails to keep her promise to the workers. Santosh opposes this, and she sets her goons and Kundan against him. Santosh is abducted and held prisoner by Kamla and Kundan, and the only way he can be released is when he compromises with them.

The today’s song is a duet song sung by Nitin Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar. On screen it is lip-synced by Manoj Kumar and Herma Malini respectively, while many other artists are present and can be seen in the picturization of this song. One can easily spot Sarika in this crowd of party-goers.

Presenting the next episode in this series. The film is a standard family drama from the still sedate 1960s, and the fever of disco was still hidden in far horizons. The film is ‘Bhai Behen’ from 1969. The lead pair of Nutan and Sunil Dutt, with a better part of two decades of careers behind them, still look handsome and comely.

The film comes from the banner of Vikram Productions, Madras, and is directed by the renowned A Bhimsingh. The cast of actors is listed as Ashok Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Nutan, Pran, Padmini, Sulochana, Helen, Diwakar, Mukri, Bhalla, Shivraj, V Puranik, and Babbanlal. Quite a formulaic presentation this one must be – one look as the list of actors, and one can quickly surmise the type of roles that each actor would have played.

Seven songs and four songwriters are listed – Rajendra Krishan, SH Bihari, Pt Narendra Sharma and Hasrat Jaipuri. This song is from the pen of SH Bihari. Music is composed by the duo of Shanker Jaikishan.

The song is about coming of age and the blossoming of first love. The song plays out in the gardens and then on to the boat and the Bombay coastline. Both Sunil Dutt and Nutan are still fresh from their 1967 hit together – ‘Milan’. And a little further back, they also have more hits together – ‘Khandaan’ in 1965 and ‘Sujaata’ in 1960. Ah yes, also ‘Gauri’ from 1968.

Enjoy this lesser heard melody in the voices of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle.

Song – Dheere Dheere Mohabbat Jawaan Ho Gai  (Bhai Behan) (1969) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – SH Bihari, MD – Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

dheere dheere mohabbat jawaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi
dheere dheere mohabbat jawaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi
dheere dheere mohabbat jawaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi

aap to jaane kya
mujhse keh kar miley
aap to jaane kya
mujhse keh kar miley
phool armaan ke dil mein itne khile
phool itne khile
husn ki zindagi gulsitaan ho dayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi
dheere dheere mohabbat jawaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi

kar chuke aap jab
mujh se ahd e wafaa
kar chuke aap jab
mujh se ahd e wafaa
farq itna hi donon mein baaki raha
haaye baaki raha
aap dil ban gaye
aur main jaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi
dheere dheere mohabbat jawaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi

aaa aaa aaaa
aaaa aaaaa aaaa aaaa
aa haa haa
aa haa haa haa haa
aaaa aaaa aaa aaa aaaa

आss आss आsss
आsss आssss आsss आsss
आsss आssss आss आss आsss
