Ah ha, even this song.

The film is ‘Alag Alag’ from 1985. Repeating an iconic song from the 1969 film ‘Aradhna’. And surely, the important thing to note is that the repeat would have involved no negotiations etc. The director, Shakti Samant, and the song writer Anand Bakshi, are the same. The producer of ‘Aradhna’ is Shakti Samant, and the producer of ‘Alag Alag’ is Rajesh Khanna, who incidentally appears in both the films. The music director of ‘Aradhna’ is SD Burman, and the music director for ‘Alag Alag’ is his son, RD Burman. I would believe that getting permission to repeat this song would have been quite easy.

As I checked out the the earlier posted original song (on 13 Jan, 2013) I notice that this repeat song is already identified by Sadanand ji in a comment posted on 31st Oct last year. And so, this song found its entry on the blog via this series. Well, for one, it is not listed in the Geet Kosh. That is the interesting part. There are seven songs listed for this film, and the singers listed against each one. The name Kavita Krishnamurthy, the singing voice of this version of the song, does not appear against any of the listed songs. Then, in the footnote, there is compiled list of playback singers given, which includes Kavita’s name, indicating that she has sung something for this film. If one does not view the film, and is not aware of this repeat performance of this song, one will keep wondering why does Kavita Krishnmurthy’s name appears in the list of playback singers, when she has not lent her voice to any song.

The 1985 film ‘Alag Alag’ is produced by Rajesh Khanna and Kusum Narula, under the banner of Aashirwaad Films International, Bombay. With this film, Rajesh Khanna made his debut as a producer in the industry. A small anecdote is noted – that Kishore Kumar did not accept any payment for his singing assignments in this film. He said that he felt indebted to Rajesh Khanna and ‘Aradhna’ for catapulting his career to a new high, and this being Rajesh’s first film as a producer, he would sing for him without accepting any payments.

The star cast of this film is listed as Shashi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Tina Munim, Deven Verma, Sushma Seth, Gita Siddhartha, Urmila Bhatt, Anjana, Raj Rani, Rajesh Puri, Subiraj, Asit Sen, Bharat Bhushan, Bhagwan, Satyen Kappu, Mohan Choti, Birbal, Vikas Anand, Manmauji, Manik Dutt, Sunil Dhawan, Kamal Kanchan, Anoop, Pratap, Surendra, Shyam, Mohit, S Chavan, Gurubachan, with special appearance by Bindu and friendly appearances by Om Prakash and On Shivpuri.

Briefly, the story of this film is,

Tina Munim is a village belle, whose only dream in life is to marry a rich man. She comes to Bombay, meets Rajesh Khanna, and mistakes him for a rich man. When he reveals that he is not a rich man, but is a struggling singer looking for work in the film industry, she dumps him. Later in the film, we find out that he is actually a rich man’s son, who is out on his own, because his parents do not appreciate his desire to be a singer. The next set of events brings Tina to the home of Shashi Kapoor, who is a doctor and is widowed. Pursuing her goal with the single minded devotion, she now attempts to become his wife, This song is placed in the film at this juncture, as she tries to woo him.

The rest of the story is quite intertwined. Shashi Kapoor actually treats Tina Munim as a daughter. Rajesh comes to the doctor to get a false disability certificate as a reference. Tina meets him, confronts him and exposes him. Rajesh leaves, then is involved in an accident in which he loses his voice. He rejoins his family. Shashi Kapoor passes away on account of some illness. Tina is back on the road. With the help of his mother, Rajesh tries to promote Tina as a singer, without letting her know. They meet again, but Rajesh leaves because of his disability. Tina mistakes this to be that Rajesh hates her. And on goes the storyline, inching towards a happily ever after and a miraculous restoration of voice etc.

We come to this repeat song with a difference. So far in this series, most of the songs that have been reused, are presented as the original recording – barring “Babul Mora. . .” and “I Am A Disco Dancer“, which have been re-recorded in different singing voices. Today’s song also belongs to this latter group – that it is also a re-recorded version and not the original. The original, of course is Kishore Da, and in this female re-rendered version, the singing voice is Kavita Krishnamurthy.

You will notice that Tina’s attire in this song is quite similar to Sharmila’s in the original. An interesting repeat this one is. Enjoy.

“Jaane Jaana Yoon Na Dekho Aaj Nafrat Se Mujhe” – this lovely lilting from the 1963 film ‘Faulaad’, is the creation of the songwriter Anjaan. A poet who has given us some of the most wonderful gems of the Hindi screen. Remembering Anjaan on the 22^nd anniversary of his passing away, earlier this week (3^rd September).

Today, I present another wonderful song penned by him – a song that has been forgotten and has remained obscure for decades. The film is equally obscure – ‘Lady of the Lake’ from 1960. The film is produced and directed by AM Khan, under his own banner of AM Khan Productions, Bombay. It is a fantasy cum stunt film. The list of actors includes Azad, Krishna Kumari, Shaam Kumar, Sherry, Jai, Neelima, Shahgul, Ram, Fani Tinchar, Jilani, Jameela, Baby Leela, OK, Avtar, Maqbool, Robert, and Burhan etc.

The film has nine songs shared between three songwriters. Five songs are written by Anjaan, one by Saba Afghani and the remaining three by Munshi Naayab. Two songs of this film are already represented on our blog.  Today’s song is also from the pen of Anjaan. Music for all the songs is composed by the music director duo of Suresh-Talwar.

The lyrics of this song have been sent in by Nitin Shah.

This song is a duet in the voices of Geeta Dutt and Mahendra Kapoor. Here is duet combination of two well known singers, who came together very rarely during their careers. There may probably be fifteen or maybe less, songs that they have sung together.

A wonderful lilting melody that should have been heard more often. I am sure you would agree.

I have been meaning to write a post on Majrooh Sultanpuri for some months now to commemorate the 100^th birth Anniversary of a poet and film song writer par excellence.   But as usual one puts somethings on back burner and postpones things for some other time.

Last week I started the lyrics of this song from ‘Qayaamat Se Qayaamat Tak’ (1988), incidentally on my iPad and saved the file in yahoo mail. But that file is not opening in the any of the computers, so this post again didn’t even start.  Today is 1^st October, 2019.  A very nice post by Sadanad Kamath Sir has appeared in the blog, which is quiet inspiring and it gave fresh ammunition to my jaded thoughts to start this write up.

Majrooh Saab’s super success with all music director, big and small, prolific and selective, is not comparable to anyone else.   None of the major song writers in his era can boast a list of composers as comprehensive as him, and more importantly successful, famous and hit songs.  Be it Madan Mohan and SD Burman, Chitragupt and Laxmikant Pyarelal, or RD Burman, Roshan, Rajesh Roshan & Khaiyyam, least of all Naushad & OP Nayyar, C Ramchandra & Salil Chaudhary also. I don’t have to start listing the beautiful lyrical and profound songs, Majrooh Saab wrote with/for all these composers.

Among his contemporaries, Kaifi Azmi, Sahir Ludhianvi, Shailendra, Hasrat Jaipuri, Rajendra Krishnan, Shakeel Badayuni, Qamar Jalaalabadi, later on Indeevar, Anand Bakshi and Gulzar etc., most were aligned with a music director or a film production  group etc.  Music Directors also preferred to work with a single lyricist or a couple at a time.  Among the major composers only SD Burman seemed to have worked with all of the above listed lyricist, as well as Majrooh.

Sahir Ludhianvi was more prone to making tributes to other poets in his songs.  But Majrooh seems to have paid a ‘khiraj-e-aqeedat’ to his fellow progressive poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz in Madan Mohan’s “Chiraag’ song “Teri Aankhon Ke Siwa Duniya Mein Rakha Kya Hai”.  This line is part of the immortal Nazm by Faiz – “Mujh Se Pehli Si Mohabbat Mere Mehboob Na Maang“.

In recent times, I have found that reading good work by others inspires me to write my own thoughts.  This is truer about poetry.  When I listen to some poets work, it given wings to my thoughts too.  I feel like writing something not necessarily on similar lines, better or superior, but some verse, some tributary sentences.

One can only wonder how such great creative minds must have felt when they heard some inspiring work of other greats and felt like expanding on the theme.  In this instance Majrooh Saab has gone on another tangent –

As a poet with a heart that was Majrooh, why won’t he say –

dil me rakh lena ise haathon se ye chhoote na kahin

In my earlier tribute post for Majrooh Saab I have stated that just the lyrical poetry in “Rahen Na Rahen Hum, Mehka Karenge” in ‘Mamta’ (1966) is enough to make his place in the ‘Hall of Fame’ of Hindi film music.   Many colourful songs for Nasir Hussain’s films are written by Majrooh Saab for OP Nayyar and RD Burman.

The new age songs written by Majrooh for the film ‘Khaamoshi’ (1996) are among my favourites.  This time I have chosen a song from the 1988 film ‘Qayaamat Se Qayaamat Tak’ produced by Nasir Hussain and directed by his son Mansoor Khan for launching of Tahir Hussain’s son Aamir Khan. Incidentally dialogues, story and screenplay all are credit to Nasir Hussain.  The song starts with prelude music of clocks going “tick tock tick tock” in a departmental store, where Juhi Chawla has come to shop with her parents, Dalip Tahil and Beena.  She accidentally runs into Aamir Khan, who has promised his parent that he will not meet and talk to Juni Chawla for 6 month (?) or so. Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla belong to two Rajput families who are at logger heads with each other over past broken alliances among the families due to which Dalip Tahil’s sister had committed suicide.

Juhi Chawla and Aamir Khan met during a picnic trip to Mount Abu and fell in love without knowing that their families are having this rivalry.  Due to this, the love story is actually doomed to end in tragedy, but at the time of this song the lovebirds are unaware of this and are happily waiting for the wait period to get over. The singers are Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik, and the music is by Anand-Milind. The songwriter is one and only Majrooh Sultanpuri.   If I remember correctly, this was the film which started the trend of abbreviating the name of film as QSQT.

A song of hope and happy endings. A song with birthday parties, picnic on cycles and dreamy dates and marking days in the calendar till happy days are here again.

Today, 4^th October, is the 88^th birthday of Sandhya Mukherjee. The grand old dame is one of the premier playback singers in Bangla cinema. In Hindi films, her contribution is limited to about 30 songs. Her involvement in Hindi films starts with the 1948 film ‘Jhoothi Kasmen’, and her singing assignments are spread over a decade and a half, till the mid 1960s.

A chance encounter with this song prompted the preparation of this post. I came across this song just a few hours ago, and listening to it was love at first hear. Such a lovely melody and arrangement, and such wonderful rendition, this song belongs to that category of unknown and hidden gems, which surprise the listener with their simplicity and beauty. I have listened to it many times since I discovered it earlier in the evening, and I do not seem to be getting enough of it.

The film is ‘Ratnadeep’ from 1952. The film is produced and directed by the legendary Debaki Kumar Bose, for the banner of Chitramaya, Calcutta. The cast of actors is listed as Anuva Gupta, Manju Dey, Molina Devi, Chhaya Devi, Tangamani, Harini, Bakul Ghosh, Abhi Bhattacharya, Pahadi Sanyal, Niteesh Mukherji, Tulsi Chakravarty, Kamal Mishra, Raj Kumar Soni, Sudheer  Chakraborty, Gokul Mukherji, and Gauri Shankar. The film is based on the Bangla novel of the same name, written by Prabhat Kumar Mukherjee.

Eight songs are listed for this film. The music director is Robin Chatterji. Two of the songs are traditional bhajans originally composed by Meerbai and Vidyapati. The remaining six songs have been written by the songwriters Pandit Madhur and Mahendra Pran. However, the lyricist for each individual song is not specifically identified.

We wish Sandhya ji a very happy 88^th birthday. May she be blessed with many more years of good health and happiness.

There are some very special memories related to this song. Memories of certain flights of fancy, associated with the expressions and emotions contained here in.

Greetings to Usha Khanna ji, on her 78^th birthday today (7^th October). It is sixty years now that she made her debut as a music director, way back in 1959 – ‘Dil Deke Dekho’, a film by Filmalya’s Sashadher Mukherjee. She recounts with a glee now, but then she was very nervous. Of course, just seventeen, recently out of school, and so miraculously given a break for a big name Shammi Kapoor starrer film. The first song recorded was “Megha Re Boley. . .”.  She walked into the recording studio with Sonik, who was the arranger for that film. She recalls that some musicians actually whistled at her as she made her way toward the group. And then Sonik told them that she is the music director. Quite a silence of disbelief followed.

Her nervousness was heightened by the fact that she would be directing Rafi Sb for her first song. The rehearsals and the recordings happened. Then at the end of the recording Rafi Sb asked her whether the song was recorded to her satisfaction. She recounts that she was too dazed and overcome by just his presence, and that she stammered in agreement. Then Rafi Sb told her – you are the music director. No matter who the singer is, but you are the boss. Even if I make a mistake, then you should correct me. Usha Khanna says that she was forever in Rafi Sb’s debt for giving her that encouragement and that advise.

More than 4 decades of active career and about 200 films in her portfolio, there are many a memorable songs and melodies that she has created – one of those music directors who would make you hear again. Ah, this one! Usha Khanna? Wow.

Listening to her music, one feels a lot of similarity with OP Nayyar. Of course that was the era that Nayyar Sb ruled with his rhythmic melodies, and other music directors would try to create music inspired by him. So Usha Khanna was also influenced by that style, but then she is not limited to style alone. There is definitely a lot of her own creativity that has gone into her work, else she would not have survived in this industry for four decades. And that too, being of a gender that generally is not associated with the work of a music director. The earlier names we can think of – Jaddan Bai, Bibbo, Saraswati Devi – all names from 1930s and 40s, when the classical music was the forte, and these ladies were trained and grounded in the classical mould.

Not Usha Khanna. She in fact, has no formal training in music. Her father, Manohar Lal Khanna, a lyricist active in the industry from late 1940s to 1960s, was her segue into music. He would write the lyrics and she would informally compose tunes for his songs at home. It was a creative spark and something special about her melodies that capture attention of her fathers industry friends like OP Nayyar and Indeewar. One thing led to another, and she was placed before Sashadher Mukherjee for an interview. The conversation started uncomfortably with singing, and ended very comfortably with music direction. S Mukherji, impressed with her tenacity and consistency (he had asked her to create two new tunes and present to him every day, for a year – think about doing that!!) gave her the first break with ‘Dil Deke Dekho’, and followed it up with ‘Hum Hindustani’ (1960). After these two films, Usha was quite much on her way. That she was able to sustain her standing in the industry for four decades, speaks volumes about her talent and her approach. Might we also notice that contemporaneous to her, and subsequently, we do not hear of any other lady music director in the industry whose performance has left a mark on the music history of Indian cinema.

Ah yes, about the flights of fancy that I mentioned about, in the first para. Regulars are aware that this song forms a part of a tandem pair. The accompanying song is the hit sung by Mukesh – “Barkha Rani, Zara Jam Ke Barso”. Yes of course, that is the better known and the more popular song in comparison. However, this rendition by Suman Kalynapur is no less pleasant, alluring and engaging. Rather more so. So when this film was released, the teenager in me was still at school. And as with a boy’s fancies at that age, of course, I do not have to put it in words. Suffice to say that right from the time I heard these two songs for the first time, my liking has always been for the Suman Kalyanpur version. The fancy connected with the Mukesh song is that there would be a charming princess for whom the boy in me would sing this song. However, the fancy associated with the Suman Kalyanpur song is that there would be charming beautiful princess who would be singing this song for me. That appealed so much more to me, that my flight of fancy those days was someone singing this song for me. Aaye haaye – the heart still takes a swing at this thought.

Quick summary – the film is ‘Sabak’ from 1973, produced and directed by Jugal Kishore, songs written by Sawan Kumar and Hasrat Jaipuri, and music by Usha Khanna. The star cast of this film is listed as Shatrughan Sinha, Poonam, Jaishri T, Jugal Kishore, Ranjan, KN Singh, Nazeer Hussain, Master Satyajeet, Chandrashekhar, Brahmchari, Hercules, Mumtaz Begum, Ramesh Dev, Seema, Rajnibala, Maruti, Rajpal, Kishan Kaul, Ved Sharma, Rajan Kapoor, Moolchand, Bholanath, Manohar, Jerry, Omi Chopra, Uma Dutt, Pritam Kumar, Raj Verma, Kishan Billa, and Sundar Singh.

As I have said in one of my recent posts, whenever I read something inspiring, be it a poem or an article, it inspires me to write something of my own thoughts. Nowadays there is less and less readable material forthcoming from the print media. The blog and its posts are sometimes savior’s for the intellect. One such article was the post by Sudhir Sir – “Gandhi Tere Desh Mein Ye Kaisa Atyachaar“, on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.  It appeared quite late in the night, but as I read it completely, it was a thoroughly readable and thought provoking post. At least I found it thought provoking and for the next few days the matters and the quotes from the Mahatma’s books, and my own thought relating to them were reverberating in my mind. I wrote a lengthy comment on the post which I am reproducing here.

Sir,

Congratulations on writing such an extensive, studied article on Mahatma Gandhi and his philosophies. Reading it, I realised I haven’t read any of his books.  Being a Kitaabi keeda from childhood hasn’t helped me reach out to any of Mahatma’s books. Where ever I have found a bookshelf and a rack of books I tend to go through the titles and authors. In my defence, I can only say that non-fiction is not my strong case. Nevertheless, it is sad and tragic that the works of such great thinking minds are nowhere to be found in present day libraries.

The para’s you quote from his writings, about non-violence and cowardice; I dare say are the sort of philosophy which is popular as well as non-popular, depending on disparities in viewpoints.

I will quote an incident to explain what I mean. This happened in friends household. The son was playing football with his friends. A few other boys from the neighborhood, came up to one of the boy and started beating him over some fight or rivalry. All the friends including my friend’s son ran away from there. The boy came home and told the parents about this. This was just a school going kid. The father said, how can you do this, being a punjab da puttar, how could you not help your friend. The son said, if tried to help him than they will start hitting me too. Logic here, self-preservation not cowardice, the mother opined.

In the light of the above incident, the Mahatma’s point is first one will try to stop the violence by non-violence. But avoiding the situation altogether is not non- violence, but cowardice.  As opposed to valour.  The will to defend the one in difficult situation. Not just defend, but save. This is valour, opposite of cowardice.

But this is an era of “tamashbeen”.  A vast majority of public now prefers to just be a bystander and watch, rather than doing anything to stop the violence. Which neither here, nor there. This is a side kick of mass media. We are used to watching violence and it doesn’t make us flinch. A humans natural tendency to reject violence is gone. We watch it like it is a natural movie watching experience.

I believe, big cities are little better, with regards to violence of any kind. For the disruption is bigger and inconvenient. Crowd will be of various dispositions in any urban setting, someone will be a local and saner than others. Hopefully.

One more point, I would make here is about the “decay” of creation. The decay in creation is caused by impurities. The very nature of creation in mortal. What has started will end, whatever has lived will die. A natural death. Like some civilisation of the past died, due to natural calamities and became a step for newer civilisation to develop.

It is the truth which is pure. The lies added to it make it impure, and cause decadence. The civilisations that decay and then die of decadence,  rot. No new civilisation can emerge from such decayed rot.

So, we as humans, the superior among all creation, have a duty to preserve this purity in ourselves.

Now I simply must quote this from the article :

It goes to establish that Gandhi was no ordinary soul, and such souls appear on this planet quite rarely. Albert Einstein has so beautifully summed it up in his tribute – “Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth”.

Of course I have read this quote before and this is not fiction. Another important thing he highlighted was about the discourse around ‘the relevance of the Mahatma today’.  And films like “Lage Raho Munna Bhai” were just a final stone dropped in the (already dry) pond, through the popular film media, to explain to the second generation Indians born after the end of the Gandhian era, that over dose of Gandhian philosophy like any other philosophy is also capable of creating a ‘chemical locha’ in the mental equilibrium.

May be the decay of this great civilization of homo-sapiens has started. The very nature of creation is temporary; all that exists will be destroyed one day.  The Universe may be infinite, but the only definite thing here is death. So be it, whether it is the death of a philosophy, a society or a world. The very wisdom of this species is in danger of being homogenized with its earlier extinct versions.

If one really gives deep thought about the situation the human race is facing, it feels as if the ‘Qayamat’ is truly underway.  The life we are living is like a tight rope walk of ‘pul-e-siraat‘.  One wrong step and below is hellfire. It’s that difficult to keep to the truth, obey the truth and keep faith in the truth.

But then there is a superior power, the creator, the sustainer and the nourisher of all that exists. As Allama Iqbal said :

mudda’ee laakh buraa chaahe to kya hota hai
wohi hota hai jo manzoor-e-khuda hotaa hai

So I have here a very positive kind of feel good song written by Javed Akhtar from ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ (2001).  The singer is Srinivas and composers are Shankar-Ehsan-Loy.   Yeah, the name of composers has a message in it.  I can try and translate the middle one i.e. ‘Ehsan’.

We all are familiar with word  ‘ehsaan‘ in songs like “Ehsaan Mere Dil Pe Tumhaara Hai Dosto” and “Ehsaan Tera Hoga Mujh Par“. The word ‘ehsan’ is a related word, with a change in meaning.  It means the ‘beauty of good conduct’. Or rather the beauty of best behavior.

The song I am presenting has a dream like quality with Dimple in white, Akshaye Kumar in white, and a white canvas.  The portrait of Dimple gradually develops on the canvas, while the Akshaye is dreaming on of pure water streams, dipping his hand into the stream,  full moon, in a dreamy halo of light and roshni.   In this moon light, all the colours are amalgamated to make a portrait, in which the fragrances are visibly mingling. Moon, stream, clouds, song, rain and butterflies are all in favour – in favour of the flavor of love, that is created of such different matter.  Some physical and some metaphorical matter, to make the billions and trillions of DNA that comprise this universe.

Four films in his debut year. An accomplishment that is not claimed by many other music directors. The year – 1966. And the films – ‘Thakur Jarnail Singh’, ‘Smuggler’, ‘Shera Daku’ and ‘Husn Aur Ishq’. And a sampler of hits from these films – the all time favorite “Hum Tere Bin Jee Na Sakenge Sanam”; the timeless Rafi Sb – Suman Kalyanour duet “Hum Jahaan Hai Wo Maqaam Husn Aur Ishq Hai”; the lilting Mukesh solo “Ae Mere Dil Teri Manzil”; the haunting Lata solo “Intezaar Ka Aalam, Tanhaai Aur Hum”; the racy cabaret number by Lata – “Dil Ka Lagaana Is Duniya Mein”. Songs all made memorable by the lilting tunes mixed with wonderful rhythm and orchestration – the music coming from the mind of Ganesh Prasad Sharma.

Remembering music director Ganesh – he passed away on 28^th March, 2000. He was 58.

Ganesh Prasad Sharma, son of the venerable Ram Prasad Sharma, came on to the film scene in early 1960s, working along with the music director duo of Laxmikant Pyaarelal. He was the younger brother of Pyaarelal. His work accompanying his elder brother as and arranger and orchestration expert. As the word got around about his talent, and his ability to create attractive rhythm and orchestration arrangements, and by the middle of the decade he started getting assignments as independent music directors. The rush of assignments was such that he had to turn down some offers, right at the beginning of his career.

Over the years, however, despite creating some very wonderful music for films, his career did not really develop much beyond the initial euphoria. Around mid 1970s, after having composed music for almost 25 films, his career simply faded away. The general opinion is that Ganesh could not get away from the shadow of the more illustrious and successful team of Laxmi-Pyaare. Since he continued to work with L-P also, the quality and characteristics of the music of his own independent films never really stood out as distinct. The similarity between the two threads of music did not allow him to create a truly independent identity for himself.

Today, I present a duet song from the 1973 film ‘Ek Naari Do Roop’. The film is remembered for the iconic favorite in Rafi Sb’s voice – “Dil Ka Soona Saaz Taraana Dhoondega”. The film is produced by the famous BR Ishara under the banner of Co-Operative Pictures, Bombay, and is directed by Madhusudan. The cast of actors is listed as Shatrughan Sinha, Rashmi Dhawan, Mehmood (Junior), Iftekhar, Madan Puri, Nadira, Roopesh Kumar, Malika, Chaman Puri, Honey Chhaya, Sapru, Lalita Kumari, Maruti, Kaajal, Rajni, Moolchand, Qureshi, Ranveer Raj, Subhash, Master Sheru, Master Ratan, and Master Chiku, with a guest appearance by Asha Sachdev.

The film has five songs listed. Four of these songs are already showcased on our blog. Today we bring on board the fifth and final song of this film. The song is penned by Naqsh Lyallpuri. The singing voices are of Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar. On screen, the song is performed by Shatrughan Sinha and Rashmi Dhawan. The name Rashmi Dhawan is not very familiar as a heroine. Her name can be seen in just one more film ‘Mann Tera Tan Mera’ from 1971, which is also produced by BR Ishara. She had a side role in that film – the lead pair is listed as Anil Dhawan and Rehana Sultana. So apparently, ‘Ek Naari Do Roop’ is the only film of this actress as the heroine.

The song is picturised as a love song, with the protagonists expressing their feelings of first love for each other, in a beach scenario. Shatrughan has a very trim and fresh look in this film,

A very interesting thing to note here. The first song of this film, posted as far back as on 31^st July, 2008, is the first teen song of our blog. And the film is the first teen film. In the golden period of Hindi film industry, there were many popular and famous actors (actors include actresses) who were well known to most of the cine goers of their relevant time. Those actors included heroes, heroines, character actors, villains and vamps, comedians, dancers etc. However, there were actors who were not  well known to most of the cine goers as most of the time, they would have small roles in films. But even with small roles, some of them have left lasting impressions on the connoisseurs of Hindi films. There was eagerness to know as to who were those actors. Among this set of actors is the playback singer and actor, Shyam Kumar.

Born as Gul Hamid Ali in Pune, Shyam Kumar (1913 – 1981) joined Kardar Studio as a playback singer on the recommendation of Naushad. He sang for Naushad in ‘Sharda’ (1942), ‘Namaste’ (1943), ‘Sanjog’ (1943), ‘Kanoon’ (1943), ‘Ratan’ (1944), ‘Pehle Aap’ (1944), ‘Sanyasi’ (1945), and ‘Dillagi’ (1949). He worked in some of these films but never sang for himself. However, his playback singing career never took off as he had tough competitions from GM Durrani and later from Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Talat Mehmood etc. After ‘Guzaara’ (1954), Shyam Kumar virtually gave up playback singing. After 1954, he sang for the last time in ‘Tilasmi Duniya’ (1962).

Being on the payroll of Kardar Productions, Shyam Kumar also acted in the films produced/directed by AR Kardar which included ‘Sharda’ (1942), ‘Sanyasi’ (1945), ‘Dard’ (1947), ‘Dulaari’ (1949), ‘Jaadoo’ (1950), ‘Deewana’ (1952) ‘Dil-e-Naadaan’ (1953), ‘Yaasmeen’ (1955) etc. Due to his impressive physique, he was considered for roles with negative shades though in a few films like ‘Vijaygarh’ (1954), ‘Rashtraveer Shivaji’ (1965) etc, he was the lead actor. During his four decades of filmy career, Shyam Kumar acted in over 140 films and sang around 30 songs in 15 films.

The first time I became aware of Shyam Kumar was in my younger days when I had heard his voice in the iconic song “Tu Mera Chaand Main Teri Chaandni” in ‘Dillagi’ (1949) which used to be often played on Radio Ceylon. It was only during my 78 RPM gramophone record collection period in early 1970s I came to know through my friend, also a record collector, of the confusion created by the name ‘Shyam’ on 78 RPM record.  As the song was picturised on the hero of the film, Shyam (actor Shyam Chadha) who was accredited as ‘Shyam’ in the credit titles of the film, many felt that the actor Shyam sang this song for himself. On the other hand, Shyam Kumar, the singer who also acted in this film was accredited as ‘Sham Kumar’ in the credit titles. The fact was that actor Shyam lip synced the voice of Shyam Kumar in the song.

I had no inkling as to how Shyam Kumar looked like though I had seen him in many films as a familiar actor without knowing his name. He generally worked in ‘B’ grade films in negative roles but in most of ‘A’ grade films, he worked as one of the henchmen of the villains. Even in scenes where his presence was  minuscule among other prominent actors, by his sheer expressions and unusual dresses he wore for the films, the audience would notice his presence. I have included a few samples of his expressions and dress sense in the films as montages in the audio clip of a song I am presenting with this article.

Shyam Kumar was the lead actor along with Krishna Kumari in the film ‘Vijaygarh’ (1954). The other star cast included Habib, Abu Bakar, Mohammed Sandow, Maqbool, Ranjana, Rafiq etc. The film was directed by AY Sheikh. The film seems to be an obscure one as not much information is available on it.  From the title, it would appear that the film belongs to the genre of historical drama. But the star cast of the film gives me an impression that it was a costume drama/stunt film.

The film’s 7 songs are as obscure as the film. Songs were  written by two lyricists – Muzaffar Shahjahanpuri and Indivar and were set to music by two music director – Krishna Dayal and AK Prem.  I have uploaded the video of the first song from the film which is “Gungunaai Fiza Jagmagaaya Sama”. It is a duet sung by Manorama (not the actress Manorama) and Shyam Kumar. This song is attributed to Muzaffar Shahjahanpuri and AK Prem as lyricist and music director, respectively. I heard the name of Manorama as a playback singer for the first time. She appears to be a trained singer. Checking through the Geet Kosh listings, we find that the singer Manorama was apparently active only during the period of 1954-55 during which time she sang a total of eleven songs for four films.
[Note: Incidentally, Yashodara Katju had a younger sister, Manorama Katju and was associated with a film magazine ‘Screen’ in 1950s.]

It is often said that Shyam Kumar never sang for himself in the films. He gave playback to other actors.  In ‘Vijaygarh’ (1954), Shyam Kumar was the lead actor and had sung three songs – two duets with Manorama and one solo. All these 3 songs are mix of romance and joy. Going by the list of other male actors in the film, I do not think that these 3 songs would make much sense if picturised on them.  So, it is a point to ponder whether Shyam Kumar performed one or more of his three songs himself.

With this song, ‘Vijaygarh’ (1954) makes a debut in the Blog.

Although not listed in the anniversaries list on our blog, a message yesterday from Mahesh ji reminded that it was the remembrance day of the music director Robin Chatterji. Some more discussion followed in which it was mentioned that Rafi Sb had never sung under the  baton of this music director. Something tickled in the memory and I searched through the Geet Kosh listings and my collection, coming up with this wonderful solo of Rafi Sb, that he has sung for Robin Chatterjee, in a Bhojpuri film.

Remembering Robin Chatterjee on the anniversary of his passing away (2^nd April, 1976).

As is the fate of many such lesser known and lesser appreciated artists, there is very little information available about him. His date of birth is recorded as 8^th January, 1914. No details about his family or early years is available. One name is available – his first teacher of classical music was Keshab Ganesh Dhekan. Robin started his career with the venerable New Theatres, in their music department. He sang in the chorus line for NT films like ‘Adhikar’ (1938).

Some records indicate that worked as an assistant to music director Anupam Ghatak. He and Anupam had learnt music from the same teacher (KH Dhekan). Apparently he assisted Anupam Ghatak with some of his films during 1939-40.

Information about his earliest films as an independent music director is not very specific. Based on Geet Kosh listings, the first Hindi film where we see his name appear as a music director is ‘Raaj Lakshmi’ (1945). Listings show that he shared the music direction responsibility for this film with Dhiren Mitra. This film was produced under the banner of MP Productions, Calcutta (now Kolkata). This film has the distinction of being the debut film for Talat Mehmood, as a singer in Hindi films. Prior to this, he had sung under the pseudonym of Tapan Kumar, all recordings being for Bangla films or for non-film Hindi and Bangla songs. The debut solo songs for him in this film are “Jaago Musaafir Jaago, Kholo Mann Ka Dwaar” and “Tu Sun Le Matwaale”.

Browsing through the Geet Kosh, we find the following films listed with his name as the music director –

and possiblye ‘Miss Toofaan Mail’ (1958), for which the name of the music director is given simply as Robin.

Of these, the credits for ‘Raj Lakshmi’ are shared with Dhiren Mitra, for ‘Firdaus’ are shared with Roshan and for ‘Dhaake Ki Malmal’ are shared with OP Nayyar. The film ‘Saiyan Se Bhaile Milanva’ is a Bhojpuri film. And the film ‘Chimni Ka Dhuaan’ was probably completed sometimes in the first half of 1960s, but its release was delayed by many years, finally releasing in 1973.

The above list of films shows a career with sizeable gaps. However, there is other information that says he was also active, rather very active in the Bangla film industry, as well as in the non-film and folk song genres. There are more details available about his films in Bangla. He has scored music for many films starring Suchitra Sen, for whom he has preferentially used the voice of Sandhya Mukherjee.

One additional bit of information from my own memory. I do remember seeing the name Robin Chatterjee as the sound recordist in the credits of some films. I am not sure that such credits are referring to the same person – possibly so.

My personal experience, and also preference, is that to appreciate the music and songs of lesser known and lesser discussed artists is to pull together as many songs of such an artist, as possible, and then listen to them at a stretch, within one, two, three sittings. In my humble opinion, this way one gets a much better feel for both the quality and the quantity of the body of work for the artist. This in turn provides a much better and a wider appreciation of his or her work. In my effort to pull together information and body of work about such artists, I find that I have not yet come across a single instance where I may have failed to appreciate the quality of work created by the artist. For that reason, I humbly state that I never will dismiss an artist only because he or she is lesser known and his/her body of work is obscure and not easily accessible. The same has been my experience with the songs tuned and composed by Robin Chatterjee. We already have 24 songs on our blog, for which he is the music director – please check out in case interested.

About this film, there are no details available, other than the name of the production banner – Messers Technicians Enterprise. No listings of actors is available either. Only the name of the music director, the singers and a list of 4 songs is available.

About this film – it is produced under the banner of Messers Technicians Enterprise, and is directed by PL Santoshi. The name should  be very familiar – PL Santoshi has been active in Hindi films as a lyricist, story/screenplay writer, dialogue writer and director, since the mid 1930s, all the way to his passing away in 1978. The star cast is listed as Sujit Kumar, Saeeda Khan, Sabita Chatterjee, Tarun Kumar, Jahar Rai etc. It is a story about the sacrifices the wife (Saeeda Khan) makes to care for and nurse her husband (Sujit Kumar), who is suffering from the memory loss.

The Geet Kosh lists 4 songs for this film. There are two solos by Suman Kalyanpur, one solo by Rafi Sb (today’s presentation), and one duet of Rafi Sb and Sandhya Mukherjee. Although the name of the lyricist is not specifically mentioned in any source, it is very likely that PL Santoshi has most likely written some or all songs of this film. However, it needs to be confirmed.

Regardless, it is a naughty, wonderfully playful song of appreciation – appreciation of the beauty of a young belle. Listen and enjoy.

Another of those “aa ha” moments, as I was searching for a song to celebrate an anniversary. Sitting on my hard disk for a long time, I just pulled it up and listened to it, as I searched for a song by Khusheed Bano, And wow, what a wonderful creation this one turns out to be. And with a surprise bonus that saved me some extra effort.

Well actually, this post should have come on board yesterday (18 Apr). Having missed the birth anniversary of Khursheed Bano on 14th April, as I checked the anniversaries page, I found that I was still in time for her anniversary of passing away on 18th April. So I started the search and prep for a song sung by her. As luck would have it, I narrowed down to this wonderful song which is such a pleasing listen.

The twist comes in like this. As I checked from the Geet Kosh in my search, and identified this song from the 1941 film ‘Pardesi’, I noted that the GK lists the singer for this song as Khursheed and chorus. But when I played this song, I was taken by surprise to discover that this song is actually a duet, and that too, a delightful romantic duet. To check on the identity of the male voice, I turned to our dear friend, Girdhari Lal ji (of Jodhpur), and requested him for identification. His response was immediate – the male voice is that of Kantilal.

And then another part clicked into place. I immediately went back to the anniversaries list to confirm, and yes my memory was right. 18th April also is the birth anniversary of singer actor Kantilal. And so the celebrations connected and coalesced together into this one song.

Interesting to note that today’s song is one of those rare combinations wherein we have two actor-singers singing together. Yes, there are other pairs that we can list – Surendra – Noorjehaan, Suraiya – Surendra, KL Saigal – Suraiya, KL Saigal – Khursheed etc. Kantilal is also a singer of certain repute, active during the early years Hindi cinema. He has appeared as an actor, and has sung songs that he has performed himself on screen. He has also given playback to other artists. About today’s song, my take is that this song is not performed by Kantilal himself on screen although he himself is also listed as one of the actors in the film. In all probability he has given playback for Motilal. Motilal used to sing off and on. In some films, we find his name listed as singer, and in some films we see him lip syncing other playback singers. In ‘Pardesi’, he is the lead actor, but his name does not appear in the list of singers. And since, in this film, he is paired opposite to Khursheed, and that she is the other singer in this song, it would follow logically that Motilal is lip syncing Kantilal voice in this song.

Now, for the details. We already have a good set of posts giving details about this film and the artists, I will not attempt to re-present that information. However, I will give the links to where these details can be perused.

Regarding actor-singer Kantilal, I refer to another post by Arun ji, for the song “Dhanwaalon Ki Duniya Hai Ye, Nirdhan Ke Bhagwaan” from the film ‘Holi’ from 1940.

The film ‘Pardesi’ is from the house of Ranjit Movietone, and is directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The list of actors, as per Geet Kosh, is – Motilal, Khurshid, Snehprabha, E Billimoria, Durgesh, Keshari, Kantilal, and Bhagwan Das amongst others. The film has 15 songs listed. The songwriters listed for this film are DN Madhok and PL Santoshi. However, specific songwriter for individual songs, is not identified for all songs. As such also for this song – the specific songwriter is not identified. Music for this film is by Khemchand Prakash.

So with this song, we pay our tributes to Khursheed Bano and Kantilal on their anniversaries today. So many things to cherish for, in memory.

chupke se kho gaya. . .

Searching through his list of songs, I chanced upon this gem of a melodious creation – one of those ‘love at first hear’ type songs that I have really come across after so many days. It has been sitting in my collection forever, and I pulled it today, looking for an unheard or less heard song to include in this post. The composition is quite atypical with a different sound structure attempted. A beautiful melody that I am sure you will also fall in love with.

Remembering C Arjun today, on the anniversary of his passing away (30 April, 1992).

Preparation for this post started a couple of days ago. And in the interim, the industry and the lovers of Hindi films have been shaken by the news of two luminaries passing away yesterday and today. Yesterday morning we got the news about Irfan Khan, who lost his battle with cancer at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai. The emotions are still to settle, and the second shocking news came in today morning. Rishi Kapoor, the darling Chintu Baba of the 1970s and 80s, lost his battle with leukemia at another Mumbai hospital today. Irfan Khan, 53 – too yuong, too early. Rishi Kapoor, 67 – lively, and a lot of life still to go. But alas no, this is the ‘as much’ that was ordained.

As I check out the dates on C Arjun today, when he passed away, he was 59. Just about midway between Irfan and Rishi, in terms of years. The writ of life is no one’s command – it is what it is. We see, we compare, we critique, we like, sometimes we ignore. But then, when the finality of the process dawns upon us, one is left with a vacuum somewhere inside that says – wish there was more. . .

Very little details are available about C Arjun’s life and times. The article in Pankaj Raag’s book dedicated to this music director is almost completely based on his work, the films that he did, and the wonderful songs that he has composed. Other than that, very little about the person himself.

He was born on 1^st Sep, 1933 in Sindh. His full name – Arjun Chandnani, which was later modified to be C Arjun, for the sake of brevity in film circles, and to avoid any confusion with the name of his mentor music director Bulo C Rani (full name Bulo Chandirani). After partition, his family moved to and settled in Baroda.

C Arjun’s father was musically inclined and was a singer. There is no information available about his training. In one place, there is anecdotal mention that C Arjun fondly remembers being present at the recording of a song by Noorjehaan in Lahore. This anecdotal nugget does not carry any other details. We read about his career initiation in early 1950s – appearing as assistant music director working with Bulo C Rani, in films like ‘Shikaar’ (1955), ‘Aabroo’ (1956), ‘Baadshah Salaamat’ (1956) and ‘Jeevan Saathi’ (1957).

In 1958 came the hit Sindhi film ‘Abana’. In this film, C Arjun shared the credits for music direction with Bulo C Rani, and not just as an assistant. Then in 1960, he got his first break as an independent music director in Hindi cinema with the film ‘Road No. 303’. His career remained very patchy throughout, despite some of the most wonderful songs and ghazals created by him. The songs gained popularity with the listening public, but that never really translated into more work for him from the producers in the industry. Following is the list of films he has composed for,

Besides these, he also has given music to films in Sindhi, Gujarati and Haryanvi. He also has composed music for non-film albums in Sindhi. He was actually in a recording studio, rehearsing with artists for the recording of a Sindhi non-film album release, when he suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away.

Today’s song is from his debut Hindi film ‘Road No 303’. The film is produced under the banner of Mahesh Pictures, Bombay, by Bheeku Bhai and Ratan Kumar. The film is directed by Dharam Kumar. The star cast is listed as Shobha Khote, Mehmood, Bhagwan, KN Singh, Tiwari, Sheelu, Helen, Altaf, Maqbool, Raju, Mirajkar, Ramlal, Fazlu, Majnu, Joshi, Kashi, S Kerawala, Master Nisar, Bakshi and others.

The film has six songs, equally shared between the songwriters Jaan Nisar Akhtar and Naqsh Lyallpuri. This particular song is sung by Asha Bhosle. Only the audio of this song is available, and I request our more knowledgeable readers to please add more information about this song, and the movie itself.

Imagine, a tall and lanky young man from India, trained to be a wrestler, and a state level sportsman from Bengal, appearing in the Indian contingent at the Olympics in 1936 / 1940 / 1944. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) the Olympics of 1940 and 1944 were cancelled due to the ongoing World War II. Had there been peace in the world during those years, maybe the course of history of the Hindi film music may have been different.

Well OK, the previous paragraph is quite speculative. But yes, the fact is that in his younger years, PC Dey was much more inclined towards body building and wrestling. Trained by one Gorobabu, a pehalwan of repute in Bengal, he represented his institution, Vidyasagar College of Calcutta (now Kolkata) at the state level championships and reached the finals in his category. Never mind that his uncle, the renowned KC Dey, would continue to press him to take his music training more seriously. But that was not to be so. Well, for some time at least.

The young Prabodh Chandra developed weakness in his eyesight, which became a handicap in continuing his proposed career as a wrestler. Getting into the wrestling ring with eyeglasses was never a good option. And so, this vision problem coupled with the second World War eventually decided the career path for this young man. And that, to the greater gain and benefit for the music lovers of this country.

Remembering Manna Dey, the stalwart singer of Indian film industry, on the 101^st anniversary of his birth today. Born in 1919, we celebrate it today in 2020.

His uncle, KC Dey would goad him, guide him and train him with a vision to for Manna Da to become one of the top singers in the country. In 1942, KC Dey was preparing music for the film ‘Tamanna’. He called upon his nephew to sing a duet with Suraiya – “Jaago Aayee Usha. . .”. With this song, the film career of Manna Dey was launched.

A little time later, Vijay Bhatt and Shankar Rao Vyas approached KC Dey to request him for playback singing in their upcoming film – ‘Ram Rajya’ (1943). Understandably, KC Dey declined the offer, since he would never give playback to any other actor. Providence would have it that the young Manna was also in the room at that time. Vijay Bhatt then directed his attention to the nephew singer. The consent was given and the agreement was in place. Manna Dey would sing for Shankar Rao Vyas in this upcoming film. The song “Tyagmayi Tu Gayi. . .” is the first solo song recorded by Manna Da.

More recordings followed. And then we come to 1950, and the film ‘Mashaal’. The song is “Upar Gagan Vishal“. Manna Dey, and his voice have arrived on to the Hindi film stage.

But then, yes, there is more to his voice than just the film songs. There is a wonderful set of non-film songs that he has recorded during his career. I bring to attention this endearingly beautiful piece, that is written by Madhukar Rajasthani. The music composition is by Manna Da himself. A wondrous song of the first tryst between the lovers. So less words, so short and sweet. And yet, the entire saga of that encounter is ensconced in this brief song of two antaraas. A small pearl from the nose pin of the damsel, gets loose and is lost. And the poet says,

Beautiful, simply delightful – that is the softness of this singing voice. Manna Dey – at 101.

Lata ji’s voice is so truly a match for the sadness oozing from this song, that seems to be so steeped in dejection and sorrow. The film – ‘Sunehre Kadam’ – the last one in Hindi cinema that he composed for in 1966. And as if this expression was not adequate, the film also has another equally melancholic song to match the depths of misery – “Na Baaz Aayaa Muqaddar Mujhe Mitaane Se”.

Bulo C Rani – music director, whose talent was never in question, and yet, in his career he stayed forever, in the sidelines and under the shadows of the bigger names in film. We celebrate his 99^th anniversary of birth today, 6^th May.

He was born this day in the year 1921, in Hyderabad, Sindh (now in Pakistan). As is with so many of the other lesser known artists of that era, practically no biographic information is documented. His father was a well known musician in his time. Bulo himself was a good singer and used to sing sufi kalaam, especially that of Abdul Shah Lateef. His love for music brought him to Lahore. He was just 21 at that time.

The shooting and processing of the film ‘Khandaan’ (1942) was in progress. Bulo met with Ghulam Haider, but did not get much attention from him. Then he also chanced to meet with DN Madhok, and a very good friendship came about. Madhok Sb got the young Bulo to travel with him to Bombay (now Mumbai). Once there, Madhok Sb got the young musician introduced into the world of Ranjeet Studios in the music department. He assisted Khemchand Prakash and Gyan Dutt in films like ‘Chandni’ (1942), ‘Sukh Dukh’ (1942), ‘Tansen’ (1943),  ‘Shahenshah Babar’ (1944) etc. In 1943 itself, his name appears for the first time in credits as a music director. He shares the music direction work with Gyan Dutt, for the film ‘Paighaan’ (1943). This is followed by a full independent responsibility for music direction, for the film ‘Caravan’ (1944).

Besides shaping up as a music director, the young Bulo was also singing. In his own films and also in films under the music direction of Khemchand Prakash and Gyan Dutt. He sang under the name of Bhola. Now that I read this name, I am wondering, whether the first name ‘Bulo’ is a variation on the name ‘Bhola’ that he used as a singer, and whether that his real first name was Bhola or Bhola-something.

With ‘Paighaam’ starts a journey of about two and a half decades during which he has given music to a little less than 600 songs in 68 or so films.

An interesting side note here. In the 1958 film ‘Al Hilal’, Bulo C created an iconic qawwaali of gigantic and everlasting popularity – “Hamen To Loot Liya Mil Ke Husn Waalon Ne”. After that, he tried to recreate the same magic in practically every alternate film that he did in the next 7 to 8 years. One qawwali by him appears in the films ‘Tin Tin Tin’ (1959), ‘Black Tiger’ (1960) , ‘Pedro’ (1960), ‘Anarbaala’ (1961), ‘Room No. 17’ (1961), ‘Jaadu Mahal’ (1962), ‘Madame Zorro’ (1962), ‘Magic Box’ (1963), ‘Haqdaar’ (1964) and ‘Son Of Hatitai’ (1965). The tone of the qawwaalis is almost similar to the iconic qawwaali of ‘Al Hilal’. But alas, none of the later qawwaalis made any lasting impression.

After the mid 1960s, no more work came his way. The mood of the Hindi film music was under transition, and like a few other music directors, he slowly faded from the memory – both of the listening public and of the film producer fraternity, He did work on some Sindhi films, and started giving coaching classes for music. Forgotten by the industry and his friends, he descended into depression in his later years. The dejection in life came to such an extreme that he eventually ended his own life (May 24, 1993). That he could not get by asking, he snatched it for himself –

The song presented today is quite uncharacteristic in style. This sounds more like an OP Nayyar-ish melody than a Bulo C Rani tune. The film is ‘Black Tiger’ from 1960. The film is produced by MH Doctor under the banner of Highway Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Akku. It is a stunt film with the star cast listed as Nadira, Azad, Sheikh, Ram Raseela, Habeeb, Jilani, Heera Sawant, Najma, Charanjeet, Arvind Kumar, Malik, Maqbool, Kedar, Gulab, Daatu, Sadhna, and Belan etc. Hmm, it is interesting to note – Nadira appearing in the female lead role in a stunt film in 1960. That is if she is the same Nadira that we are familiar with. I request other knowledgeable readers and friends to please add more information about this.

The film has 6 songs. 5 of them are written by Saba Afghani and the sixth one is by Tabish Kanpuri. This song is from the pen of Saba Afghani. The singing voices are of Geeta Dutt and Mahendra Kapoor. A delightful song of romantic exchange that has a very pleasing sound.

During the course of my exercise to pick up Hindi songs in Bangla films, I have gone through many Bangla films with their basic details such as the director, story writer, star cast, lyricist, music director, playback singers etc. In the list of lyricists in any Bangla film, if I find the name of the lyricist from Hindi films, I am almost certain that there would be at least one Hindi song in that Bangla film. In some cases, I found that though the name of the Hindi film lyricist was not mentioned, still one or two Hindi songs were found in such Bangla films.

During one of such exercise, I got to know of a Bangla film ‘Sorry Madam’ (1962). The film was directed by Dilip Bose. Although, I could not find the name of Hindi lyricist for the film, the names of playback singers like Manna Dey, Mukesh, and Asha Bhosle gave me a glimmer of hope that there could be at least one Hindi song in the film. The music director for the Bangla film was Ved Pal. But I scored a blank on this count. However, during the searching the songs on the internet, I came across not one but three Hindi songs under the film’s title ‘Sorry Madam’ (Unreleased). Some further searches on the internet revealed a story behind this unreleased film which I was not aware of it. The film was to be a remake of Bangla film ‘Sorry Madam’ (1962) which was a box office success. Hindi remake with the same title was to be produced and directed by Dilip Bose who had also directed its Bangla version. But the film remained unfinished because the director, Dilip Bose went into deep depression after a personal tragedy.

Dilip Bose started his filmy career as actor in Bangla films ‘Kashinath’ (1943) and ‘Bichar’ (1943). I could not get any lead as to what he did during 1943-1960. In 1960, he directed his first Bangla film ‘Dui Bechaara’ (1960). The next Bangla film which he directed was ‘Sorry Madam’ (1962) with Biswajeet and Sandhya Roy in lead roles. ‘Chaandi Ki Deewar’ (1964) was his first directorial venture in Hindi film. During his filmy career, he directed 5 Bangla films, 6 Hindi films and 10 Bhojpuri films. He also acted in about a dozen Bangla films which included Satyajit Ray’s ‘Charulata’ (1964). He also did some smaller roles in a few Bhojpuri films besides story and screen-play writing.

In 1979, after directing Hindi films like ‘Chaandi Ki Deewar’ (1964), ‘Sansaar’ (1971), ‘Thokar’ (1974), ‘Badnaam’ (1975) and ‘Sikka’ (1976), he decided to produce and direct the Hindi remake of his Bangla film ‘Sorry Madam’ (1962) with Raj Kiran and Kajal Kiran in the lead roles. Six songs, all rendered by Mohammed Rafi (some with Asha Bhosle) were recorded in December 1979 under the music direction of Chitragupt. However, Dilip Bose was struck with a personal tragedy when he suddenly lost his wife. Being a sentimental person, Dilip Bose was so much devastated by this tragedy that he went into deep depression for a long time and the film remained unfinished. After recovering from the depression, Dilip Bose concentrated mainly on directing Bhojpuri films. Dilip Bose died in 2002.

Even though 6 songs of the unfinished film ‘Sorry Madam’ (1979) were recorded in December 1979, no gramophone records or CDs were issued. So, they remained unavailable to the public. It was only after the death of the music director, Chitragupt in January 1991 that the tape containing the songs were discovered.  It was decided to release the song in an album. However, by that time, Hindi film music scene had changed and composition style of these six songs sounded old to the music companies who were not interested in releasing the songs. It was only after the success of ‘Veer Zara’ (2004) in which the old-style song composition of Madan Mohan became a hit that a fresh effort was made to release the songs. A music publishing company agreed to release the songs. The tape of the songs were sent to Belgium to digitally restore them to the highest sound quality. Thus,  the songs which were recorded in December 1979 had to wait for 30 years to get them released in an album ‘Teri Adaa’ in 2009.

I am presenting one of the six songs, “Dekho Ji Waado Karo Ke Door Kabhi Tum Na Rahoge” from the unfinished film ‘Sorry Madam’ (1979). The song is written by Kaafil Aazar which is set to music by Chitragupt.

I would prefer to stop counting the numbers, and rather go by the impressions in the memory. Well, it sounds so unbelievable that Nitin Mukesh turns 70 today. It seems like just a little while ago that we heard him sing for the first time in ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970). It was actually an unlisted song, in English. A song of good wishes and greetings – “Wish Me Luck”.

Then in 1981, when the song “Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi” from the film ‘Kranti’ was doing the rounds of popularity, my first impression on hearing this voice was – how come, was this song recorded earlier? The voice sounds so close to the voice of Mukesh, his father. Well yes, the voice is distinct, if one is listening carefully. But it also has an unmistakable shade of Mukesh’s voice.

Nitin Mukesh was born this day in 1950. Although he made his singing debut in 1970, his songs are few and far between in that first decade of his career. His more active years were the 1980s and 1990s. And even so, one cannot count his career as being prolific.

Today’s song is from the 1981 film ‘Nakhuda’. It was a big banner film of its time, produced by Yash Chopra for Yash Raj Films. The film is directed by Dilip Naik. The star cast for the film is Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Swaroop Sampat, Raj Kiran, Madan Puri, Javed Khan, Vikas Anand, Sudhir Dalvi, Bharat Kapoor, Madhu Malhothra, Mac Mohan, Yunus Parvez, Asha Sachdev, Jagdish Raj, Mahaan, Murlidhar, Bandini, Nandini, Umesh, Murari, Chand, Raj Verma, Chandu, Pardesi, Amarnath, Rajesh, and Rauf Khan.

The film has 6 songs. One song is a composition by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and also sung by him. The remaining 5 songs are from the pen of Nida Fazli, and have been tuned to music by Khayyaam. One song of this film is already showcased on our blog. This is the second song of this film to make its appearance here today. Lyrics for this song have been sent in by our dear Prakash ji.

On screen, the song is picturized on Raj Kiran and Swaroop Sampat. As the words indicate, this is an ‘expectant parents’ song, with the characters expressing happiness and love for each other, with the knowledge that another member of the family is on way.

Today I did a tiny research with the resources available at my disposal. I have inferred that the music duo Kalyanji Anandji have scored music for most of the movies where Feroz Khan was in the lead; till the time of Kalyanji’s passing in 2000. In fact, I found two Feroz Khan starring movies, on our blog, that are on the threshold of being yippeee’d. One has two songs left, but the album of that movie shows that Kalyanji-Anandji have given music for three sequences where there is no song. I am sure one music piece has Helen burning the dance floor, that is as brilliant as is the theme music for that movie. So for today we leave that movie alone and concentrate on the one that is one short of yippeee-hood.

That film is ‘Shankar Shambhu’ (1976). The four out of possible five songs from that move were posted thus:-

The final song of the movie is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Mohammad Rafi. It has Feroz Khan romancing Sulakshana Pandit in various locations. If my memory is right the couple have just got wet because they jump out of the boat on which they were having a joy ride in a lake to escape from constables led by Bhagwan Dada.

I don’t know what is there left to write about the music duo that the readers of this blog don’t know. So without much ado let us get to the song and thank Kalyanji Virji Shah (who would have been 92 today) and his brother Anandji Virji Shah for the treasure trove of songs that they have left for us to relish. And on the blog we have 583 from a possible 1435 songs i.e. not even halfway done.

With this post now, ‘Shankar Shambhu’ has all its songs on the blog.

‘Amrit’ released on 27th June 1986. It was written, produced and directed by Mohan Kumar (01/06/1934- 10/11/2017) whose wife happened to be the sister-in-law of J Om Prakash, and actor Deepak Parashar happens to be his sister’s son. Mohan Kumar made films under his banner EmKay Films Pvt. Ltd. and began as writer-producer-director with ‘Aas Ka Panchhi’ (1961) which was a Filmyug Presentation.

‘Amrit’ has Smita Patil and Rajesh Khanna play senior citizens whose children ill-treat them after their respective spouses’ death. Amrit played by Rajesh Khanna has a son whose wife makes her father-in-law a male-nanny cum servant in-charge of buying essentials etc. Amrit loves his grandson very much and he in turn is hand-in-glove with the grandpa in eating chocolates and ice creams on the sly. Similarly, Kamla Devi played by Smita Patil has a son, daughter-in-law, daughter-in-law’s brother and a granddaughter for family where she is reduced to being a maid and nanny. Both the seniors come in contact with each other because of the grand kids who happen to be classmates and playmates. The seniors develop a rapport and look after each other when they fall sick and they have a group of sympathizers in the local doodhwala, dhabawala, and a jobless lawyer and his wife (Satish Shah, Birbal, Shafi Inamdar and Aruna Irani). This is unacceptable to their children who take that as an excuse to show the door to their parents. The elders re-locate and Amrit finds a job as a school bus conductor and Kamla devi takes to training ladies in tailoring etc. The grand kids come looking for the grandparents after they grow up and get married. Simple tear-jerker family drama movie.

Today on the occasion of Kaka’s (a.k.a. Rajesh Khanna) death anniversary, let us have a song from ‘Amrit’ which was one of his successful movies in the period after his reign as superstar. We have him minus his characteristic mannerisms in this movie. This movie was Kaka’s next association with Mohan Kumar after the successful ‘Avtaar’.

This song is a Karva Chauth song and Smita Patil is seen breaking her fast with Shashi Puri (guest appearance) playing her husband. Then we see Kaka going into flashback about his wife and their way of celebrating the festival. Zarina Wahab in a guest appearance plays the role of the wife. The song is written by Anand Bakshi to Laxmi-Pyare’s music. Anuradha Paudwal and Manhar Udhas are the playback.

I have seen this movie a few times and I am always amazed at the exact same red colour that both the ladies wear in this song and their accessories. Kamla Devi (Smita Patil) taking pains with accessories is understandable as she is in a better financial position as compared to Savitri (Zarina Wahab) who is the wife of a signalman at Rajpur station. By the time the song ends Savitri also joins in (she seems to have learnt it too). Another thing is both couple sing the same song. Kya baat hai!!!.  How?

Incidentally, Zarina Wahab who made her debut in 1974 in the Dev Anand produced and directed ‘Ishk Ishk Ishk’ celebrated her 61st birthday on 17th July. Here is wishing her belatedly, all happiness and health.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 42

From the three movies eligible for the ‘blog ten-year’ challenge today, we have already represented one today in the morning and taking this another one to add to the celebrations for today. This song is from the 1964 movie ‘Phoolon Ki Sej’ and it is sung by Mohd Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. This song is picturised on Mehmood and Shubha Khote, where the two lovers are singing and enjoying in their ‘famous’ style

As mentioned in the earlier post total four songs were represented on the blog on 19.07.2010 including a song from this movie ‘Phoolon Ki Sej’ (1964).

Two of the above listed films, i.e. ‘Amar Jyoti’ (1936) and ‘Phoolon Ki Sejh’ had made their debut on the blog that day.

‘Phoolon Ki Sej’ has total nine songs (including one three-part song) which are all written by Hasrat Jaipuri. Music for this movie is composed by Aadi Narayan Rao. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi, Mukesh and Manna Dey had given their voices to the songs in this movie. So far, the following songs from ‘Phoolon Ki Sej’ have been posted on the blog;

Seven songs of this film have already been covered on the blog, including the multiple version song ‘Taaron Ki Aankhon Ka Taara Tu’. So now, song are now left to be covered. One song being posted today will leave this movie only one short of ‘Yippeeee Land’

When I checked the earlier song posts of this movie, I noted that one song from this movie Aa Bhi Ja Rasiya was covered by our respected late Bharatbhai under his ‘Raag Maalikaa’ series (this was song number 12 in that series).

On this day today when our blog is celebrating 12^th birth anniversary I take this opportunity to remember and pay our tributes to Bharatbhai who is not with us this year to celebrate this occasion. We all miss him today.

But I am sure wherever he is, he is enjoying this ‘musical journey’ and showering his blessings to this blog and on all ‘Atulites’ today.

 Today, 22^nd July 2020, is the is the ninety-seventh birth anniversary of legendary singer Mukesh Chandra Mathur, whom fondly know as Mukesh. (22 July 1923 – 27 August 1976)

If we look at the statistics available on the blog Mukesh has sung around 932 songs for Hindi movies and so far, we have covered 786 of his songs on the blog.

Today we get introduced to a song from the 1973 movie – ‘Jhoom Uthaa Aakaash’. I became aware of this movie and its songs in 2013 when I used to regularly browse songs and was sharing them for the blog. At that time in 2013 I came across four songs of this movie and one of them was a duet song having the voice of Mukesh ji. Today I am presenting the same song on the blog.

As mentioned above I had never earlier heard about this movie, so when I got my copy of HFGK Vol-IV, I find the movie details there, which are as given below;

‘Jhoom Uthaa Aakaash’ is directed by YN Kapoor for Bahaar-Milan Productions. The list of actors is Sujit Kumar, Lakshmichhaaya, Anita, Rajdeep, Bharat Bhushan, Tiwari, Abhi Bhattacharya, Randhir, Mohan Choti, Jhankana Desai, Nana Palsikar, Bramhachari, Rajraani, Kalpana Diwan, Uma Khosla, Geeta Kapoor, Soni, Koki, SM Akhtar, Master Deepak, Master Dinkar, Ravi Bhatnagar, Ambar Kumar, Yogesh Kapoor and others.

This movie has seven songs written by Siraj Aghazi and Atish Jalani. Music is composed by Kanti Kiran. Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor, Mukesh, Hemlata and Krishna Kalle had given their voices to the songs in this movie. Mukesh had only one duet song in this movie with Hemlata. I think this movie must be an obscure movie of its time and also its songs may not have been even heard by many. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

The songs of this movie have special ‘folk’ touch to them.  I like them and particularly this song, it grows upon if we listen to it again and again.

Only the audio of this song is available. I have not been able to get correct words at many places. I would request listeners with keener ears to help in getting the correct words there.

With this song ‘Jhoom Uthaa Aakaash-1973’ makes its debut on the blog. And, if I am not wrong, with the today’s song music director Kanti Kiran also makes his debut on the blog.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 43

Ten years back on this day 22^nd July 2010 five songs were posted on the blog as per following.

So, today, we have two movies eligible for posting a song under ‘Blog Ten-Year Challenge’ viz. ‘Gunaahon Ka Devta’ (1967) and ‘Thakur Jarnail Singh’ (1966). In this post, I am presenting a song from ‘Gunaahon Ka Devta’ wherein Prakash ji had sent the lyrics of this multiple versions song.

When I saw the mail and the song title, I was surprised to note that this song has not been posted yet on the blog. But when I checked the other remaining song from this movie, I was more surprised to note that there is one more song which I like very much because of the actor performing on it but this song too is yet to be posted on the blog. Well, I had watched this movie during my stay at Parli-Vaijnath from 1985-1988. And this movie did bring back memories of my stay there and the ‘peak movie watching period’ for me there, when I used to watch maximum movies of yesteryear coming to theatres. I remember I liked this movie and its songs too.

The film is produced and directed by Devi Sharma for ‘Janta Chitra’. It has Rajshri, Jeetendra, Mehmood, Leela Chitnis, Aruna Irani, Randhir, Tun Tun, Farida, Shahid, Rekha, SK Prem, Sujata, Jankidas and Jeevan. The story of this movie is also written by Devi Sharma, and its screenplay was written by Ravi Kapoor. Dialogues of this movie were written by Sarshar Sailani. Editing of this movie was done by Dharamvir. The movie was passed by Censor Board on 19.05.1967.

This movie has seven songs including one multiple version song. Lyrics were written by Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra (one song – the title song only). Music of this movie was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. Mohd Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh, Manna Dey and Sharda had given their voices to for the songs in this movie.

So far, the following songs from ‘Gunaahon Ka Devta’ have been posted on the blog; 

Today’s song is the multiple version song where the male version is sung by Mohd Rafi and the female version has the voice of Sharda. Jeetendra is lip syncing in the voice of Rafi Saab in the male version whereas in the female version Rajshri is lip syncing in the voice of Sharda. Both of them are seen in the picturization of this song where we could see the lovers ‘complaining’ about each other for ‘trapping in love’ and simultaneously also reminding that one will not be able to forgot them easily.
