Listening to Hemant Kumar’s voice is a divine experience. Listening to songs sung by him has a soothing effect on the listeners. I call such songs “mental massage” songs.

Here is a duet sung by Hemant Kumar and Lata. This song is “Chhaayaageet” song, viz a romantic song that is best listened to late at night.

Ravi, who was the assistant of Hemant Kumar till the previous year, is the lyricist as well as the music director for this song. And he has made very good use of the voices of Hemant Kumar and Lata.

Only the audio of this song is available, but I can guess that this song was picturised on Pradeep Kumar and Geeta Bali who were the lead pair of this movie.

Song-Muskuraati huyi chaandni (Albeli) (1955) Singers-Hemant Kumar, Lata, Lyrics-Ravi, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

muskuraati huyi chaandni
jagmagaataa huaa aasmaan
le chale ho mujhe tum kahaan
do muhabbat bhare dil jahaan
kah sake pyaar ki daastaan
ham tumhen le chalen hain wahaan

kah rahe hain nazaare pukaar ke
beet jaayen naa din ye bahaar ke
sansanaati hawaaon ke geet ne
taar chhede hain dil ke sitaar ke
ye suhaanaa samaa hai umangen jawaan
phir khule kyun naa dil ki zubaan
muskuraati huyi chaandni
jagmagaataa huaa aasmaan
le chale ho mujhe tum kahaan
do muhabbat bhare dil jahaan
kah sake pyaar ki daastaan
ham tumhen le chalen hain wahaan

aaj kaisi suhaani ye raat hai
zindagi mein nayi ek baat hai
in sitaaron ki rangeen chhaanv mein
do dilon kaa anokhaa ye saath hai
ham tumhaare huye tum hamaare huye
pyaar kaa muskuraayaa jahaan
muskuraati huyi chaandni
jagmagaataa huaa aasmaan
le chale ho mujhe tum kahaan
do muhabbat bhare dil jahaan
kah saken pyaar ki daasataan
ham tumhen le chalen hain wahaan

Romantic songs/love songs are one of the most common form of songs in Hindi movies. It can be seen that many of these songs use high sounding grandiose words, whose meanings often escape the common listeners.

It comes as a breath of fresh air when simple day to day easy to understand words are used to convey the tender romantic feelings. Here is just that kind of a song. This song is from “Ek Saal” (1957). This song is a duet sung by Hemant Kumar and Lata. The lyrics are written not by an established lyricist but a part time one. Ravi, known more as a music director, is the lyricist. And what superb lyrics he has come up with. This has to be one of the most adorable romantic songs I have ever come across.

Ravi is of course the music director of this song as well.

This movie had Ashok Kumar and Madhubala in lead roles and I guess that this duet was picturised on them.

Here is this divine romantic song from “Ek Saal” (1957).

Song-Ulajh gaye do nainaa dekho(Ek Saal) (1957) Singers-Hemant Kumar, Lata, Lyrics-Ravi,MD-Ravi

Lyrics

ulajh gaye do nainaa dekho
ulajh gaye do nainaa
ulajh gaye do nainaa dekho
ulajh gaye do nainaa

preetam uljhi lat suljhaayen
gori kaa chandaa saa mukh sharmaaye
preetam uljhi lat suljhaayen
gori kaa chandaa saa mukh sharmaaye
preet ki dori mein bandh kar dono
man hi man muskaayen re
dekho ulajh gaye do nainaa

jab tak ghar na aayen saanwariyaa
tadpe hai gori jaise jal bin machhariyaa
baat takat apne saajan ki
raah mein nain bichhaaye dekho
ulajh gaye do nainaa

dekho ulajh gaye do nainaa
ulajh gaye do nainaa dekho
ulajh gaye do nainaa

“Naadaan” (1951) is a movie starring Dev Anand and Madhubala.

Here is a delightful song from this movie. This song is sung by Talat Mehmood and it is picturised on Dev Anand and Madhubala. P L Santoshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by the curiously named Chic Chocolate, who was in fact an assistant to C Ramchandra for much of his career, and this movie being one of the rare occasions where he got to work as a full fledged music director.

What a nicely sung and picturised song it is !

This post is written by Raja, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie songs and a regular contributor of writeups to this blog

For a Bollywood old-song buff like me, one of the biggest pleasures of checking out youtube is to discover new “old” songs. Over the years I have not just listened to hundreds of songs that I already knew but have discovered several new “old” songs that have absolutely delighted me. The “suggestions” feature on youtube ensures that I spend several unintended hours listening to songs.

One would think that by now I would’ve listened to most of “my type of songs” out there but that would be grossly incorrect. Everyday, I keep coming across more songs out there, either newly posted or those which escaped me earlier. It is a never-ending journey – and thankfully so (much like Atul’s posting on this blog). It keeps me extremely humble too – there is an ocean out there and anybody who thinks he can see the end of it is fooling himself.

I will admit that in my “random” youtube wanderings, there is a slight method to the madness. And that method is called “Rafism”. :-) Yes, if one wants me to click on a video, one only has to mention “Rafi” somewhere in the title – and I will jump right in. I have discovered SO many Rafi saab songs on youtube that I’d never heard before! I don’t know where to start thanking all those who have uploaded these songs for public consumption, may God bless them!

Today, I stumbled upon another lovely Rafi saab song that I want to share with you. It is from a movie I’d never heard of before – Ek Phool Ek Bhool (1968). I’d never heard this song before today but the counter now stands at about ten – and counting. :-) Yes, I’m reasonably mad when it comes to Rafi saab. There’s something about that voice that just goes straight to my heart. It is difficult to describe but I take comfort in the knowledge that I am not alone in experiencing this emotion where Rafi saab is concerned.

Since Atul specializes in little-known songs from little-known movies (well, both the song and the movie were definitely unknown to me!), I thought his blog is just the right place to bring greater awareness about this song. It certainly deserves to be known better.

It is picturised on Sudhir and an actress who I am not able to name (Jayanti?). Maybe somebody else can identify her?

The lyrics are by Indivar, the music is by Usha Khanna.

Song-Mere dil pe andhera sa chhaane lagaa (Ek Phool Ek Bhool) (1968) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Indeewar, MD-Usha Khanna

Lyrics

Mere dil pe andhera sa chhaane lagaa
aap chehre se chilman hata leejiye
mere dil pe andhera sa chhaane lagaa
aap chehre se chilman hata leejiye
mere aage zamaana ye jhuk jaayega
aap apni nigaahen jhuka leejiye

ab ye doori na humse sahi jaayegi haay
aap pehloo mein apne bitha leejiye
mere aage zamaana ye jhuk jaayega
aap apni nigaahen jhuka leejiye
mere dil pe andhera sa chhaane lagaa

aap ke dil ka gham, dil mein rakh lenge hum
aur daawaa karenge na ehsaan ka ho
aap ke dil ka gham, dil mein rakh lenge hum
aur daawaa karenge na ehsaan ka
aur daawaa karenge na ehsaan ka
aap ka pyaar paane ke qaabil hain hum
aap chaahen agar aazmaa leejiye
mere aage zamaana ye jhuk jaayega
aap apni nigaahen jhuka leejiye
mere dil pe andhera sa chhaane lagaa

ek rang-e-hayaa, ek rang-e-wafaa
rang do aapki donon aankhon mein hain haay
ek rang-e-hayaa, ek rang-e-wafaa
rang do aapki donon aankhon mein hain
rang do aapki donon aankhon mein hain
kaise hotey hain donon jahaan dekh lo
aap pal bhar to palken utha leejiye
mere aage zamaana ye jhuk jaayega
aap apni nigaahen jhuka leejiye
mere dil pe andhera sa chhaane lagaa
aap chehre se chilman hata leejiye
mere dil pe andhera sa chhaane lagaa

“Bilwamangal” (1954) is a movie that was made on the life of the blind poet of middle ages, namely Surdas, and the title role of Surdas was played by K C Dey, who himself was blind, just like Surdas.

This movie, which also had Ulhas, Suraiyya, asha Mathur etc in it had some nice songs in it. I have so far discussed two songs from this movie.

Here is another song from this movie. It is sung by Suraiyya and this song was naturally picturised on her as well. D N Madhok, who produced this movie too, is the lyricist. Bulo C Rani composed the music.

Here is this nice song from “Bilwamangal” (1954), which I discovered just a few hours ago.

Song-Pyaar ki peer suhaani suhaani (Bilwamangal) (1954) Singer-Suraiyya, Lyrics-D N Madhok, MD-Bulo C Rani

Lyrics

bachpan beetaa aayi jawaani
sar se gathariyaa le ke

“Navrang” (1958) is a song that is well known for its songs. I have discussed three songs from this movie in the past. Here is another song from this movie. I was not aware of this till a few hours ago.

This song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor who was making his playback debut in this movie. The song is picturised on Mahipal who looks at the homely Sandhya and visualises her in a less homely avatar (viz dressed more like a seductress) in his imagination.

The song is written by Bharat Vyas in shudhh Hindi and the lyrics sound quite sweet to listen to. Mahedra Kapoor though commits one faux pas in this song. He pronounced “gadhhaa”= formed/ shaped as “ghadaa”=pot

If one can overlook that (Hindi purists will have difficulty getting reconciled to this pronounciation, though), then it is a nice song to listen to. C Ramchandra is the music director.

Song-Shyamal Shyamal baran komal komal charan (Navrang) (1958) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-C Ramchandra

Lyrics

shyaamal shyaamal baran
komal komal charan
tere mukhde pe chandaa gagan kaa jadaa
bade man se vidhaataa ne tujh ko gadhaa
bade man se vidhaataa ne tujh ko gadhaa
shyaamal shyaamal baran
komal komal charan

tere baalon mein simti saawan ki ghataa,
aaa aaa aaa
tere baalon mein simti saawan ki ghataa,
tere gaalon pe chhitki poonam ki chhataa,
o poonam ki chhataa
teekhe teekhe nayan
teekhe teekhe nayan
meethe meethe bayan
tere angon pe champaa kaa rang chadhaa
bade man se vidhaataa ne tujhko gadhaa
shyaamal shyaamal baran
komal komal charan

ho ho
ye umar ye kamar
sau sau bal khaa rahi
sau sau bal khaa rahi
teri tirchhi nazar teer barsaa rahi
teer barsaa rahi
naazuk naazuk badan
naazuk naazuk badan
dheeme dheeme chalan
teri baanki lachak mein hai jaaduu badaa
bade man se vidhaataa ne tujhko gadhaa
shyaamal shyaamal baran
komal komal charan

kis paaras se sonaa ye takraa gayaa
tujhe rach kar chiteraa bhi chakraa gayaa
kis paaras se sonaa ye takraa gayaa
tujhe rach kar chiteraa bhi chakraa gayaa
ho chakraa gayaa
na idhar jaa sakaa
na idhar jaa sakaa
na udhar jaa sakaa
rah gayaa dekhtaa wo khadaa hi khadaa
bade man se vidhaataa ne tujhko gadhaa
bade man se vidhaataa ne tujhko gadhaa
shyaamal shyaamal baran
komal komal charan

“Ye Dil Kisko Doon” (1963) is not a well known movie as far as I am concerned. This movie had Shashi Kapoor and Raagini in it. May be that has something to do with the obscurity of this movie. :D

The musical team of this team created some wonderful songs though. If the movie failed to capitalise on them, then one can only blame the movie.

Here is a superb light hearted romantic comedy song from this movie. In this song, Shashi Kapoor chases Raagini is a mela and sings this roadside Romeo song. In the course of this song, he imitates the leading heroes of the days viz Raj Kapoor,Dev Anand etc, full with their getup and the relevant portion of the music taken from the well known tunes of their movies.

This fun song, which I came to know about only after its lyrics were sent to me by nahm, is sung with his customary gusto by Rafi. Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Iqbal Qureshi.

Here is this fun song that I loved watching and listening to, having discovered it just now !

“Bhagwaan Parshuram”(1970) is a B grade mythological movie. It is a Mewar Films International presentation. It was directed by Babubhai Mistry. The cast of the movie included names like Abhi Bhattacharya, Jaishree Gadkar, Sunder, Niranjan Sharma, Jeevan, Trilok Kapoor, Raj Kumar, Tabassum, Tuntun, etc.

This movie is an extremely rare movie despite being a recent movie by the standards of this blog. The songs of this movie are just as rare. Personally I do not recall listening to the songs of this movie.

Here is inarguably the best song from this movie. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised on Jayshree Gadkar and Abhi Bhattacharya.

Madan is the lyricist and music is composed by Jai Kumar.

Prakashchandra, who sent me the lyrics of this song, informs me that this song is one of the personal favourites of Asha Bhonsle. That indeed makes this rare song a very special song indeed.

Song-Mere man ke maansarowar mein (Bhagwan Parshuram)(1970) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Madan, MD-Jai Kumar

If a movie title has nouns like “Behan”,”Bahu”, Bhabhi” etc in it preceded by adjectives like “Badi”, “Chhoti” etc then one can safely conclude that sacrificing characters lie ahead in the movie and unless one is masochistic in nature, one needs to steer clear of such movies.

One great thing about these movies is the music though. One should listen to the songs (and watch the picturiation of the song) as standalone offerings and move on. That is what I do, not only with such movies, but with most movies.

“Chhoti Bhabhi” (1950) was released just one year after “Badi Behan” (1949). “Badi Behan” (1949) had superb songs in it. “Chhoti Bhabhi” is no different. It may not be just a coincidence that the two movies had the same music directors, vz Husnlal Bhagatram.

Here is a delightful song from “Chhoti Bhabhi” (1950). This song is a romantic song of the kind that is sweet and innocent and gently naughty, all at the same time. It this song, a young and pretty Nargis asks Karan Dewan how much he loves her.

This cute song is sung by Lata and Rafi. Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by nahm.

“Saugandh”(1942) was a New Theatres Production. It was directed by Hem Chander. The star cast of this film includes Pahadi Sanyal, Bharti, Asit Baran, Chandrawati, Suprabha Mukherjee, Shrilekha, Chhavi Biswas, Vinay Goswami, Khagen Pathak, Farouk Mirza, Dar Kaashmiri, Nemo, Tulsi Chakravarty, Puttan, Narayan Rao, Maya Bose, Gopal Das, Kaali Ghosh, Heera Bai, Natwar, Jawahar Lal, Kaalo, Dwijen Sanyal. The songs of this film are penned by Pt. Natwar, and the music is RC Boral.

Here is what Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved in house encyclopaedia, has to say about this movie:

SAUGANDH-1942 was a New Theatres film, based on a totally Bengali background. The screenplay and direction was by Hemchandra Chunder and the story and dialogues were by Boney Chatterjee.

Bipin was a hardworking man who built his business single handedly. His family was, wife, son Kumar-who studies in Calcutta and Arun- who is about to complete school in the village. Arun is more interested in loving Shanti-daughter of their neighbour and enemy Nilamber. Bipin falls sick and Kumar is called back. Kumar leaves his love-Prabha,daughter of his professor Laxmidas, and returns only to see the father dying. He gives father a promise that he will take care of business and family.

Kumar patches up with Nilamber to marry Shanti with Arun and sends Arun to Calcutta for further education. In Calcutta,Arun meets Bilas, who leads him waywards and introduces him to Gunsundari-a society girl. Kumar learns about all this, meanwhile their mother is ill and dies before Arun comes back. Kumar admonishes Arun, but he goes back to Calcutta to meet Gunsundari who throws him out. Next day Arun is arrested for her murder. Kumar reaches Calcutta and takes all the blame on himself.

Shanti and Prabha together with help of police find out that the murderer is Bilash.

Arun’s eyes open, they all return to village and both brothers get married.

This pattern of story was repeated several times not only in Hindi, Bengali but also many other languages later.

Here is a love song from this movie. It is sung by Asit Baran and Shanti.

In the lyrics, the two lovers address each other as raja beti (princess) and raja beta (prince) respectively and communicate in a dialect that is spoken in riral areas of eastern UP and Bihar, so it is difficult to decipher unless one has some exposure to this dialect. For whom is the princess preparing this floral garland, the man asks the lady. Come here and I will whisper the name in your ears, the lady replies. And who is she that the prince dreams about all the time, she asks. Come here and I will tell you in a song, he replies. The princess does not go anywhere just like that, She has to maintain her dignity, comes the reply.

The song is picturised on Asit Baran and his love interest, who I guess is played by Bharti. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her.

The wonderful and cute lyrics are penned by Pt Natwar. Music is composed by R C Boral.

All sources (obviously copying from HFGK) mention the female singer as just Shanti. I wonder who this singer is. Is she Shanti Sudha Ghosh, a playback singer active those days or someone else ? Or is it so that the name is nothing but the name of the character in the movie who lip syncs this song ? I request our knowledeable readers to throw light on the identification of this female singer.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

[Belated Happy Birthday, to Peevesie (23 Dec) :) ]

Himalayan Diaries – 1
– – – – – – – – – – – –

Sometimes people end up giving really deep insights to you about yourself. But during the conversation, you do not grasp it and brush it off. This happened to me during my first jury at NID. First let me explain the concept of jury. Jury is what happens, when instead of exams, the college decides that a student should have only half an hour every semester to display every scrap of work they did for 4.5 months and justify that he/she did learn something. If one manages to do that, then they give you a decent grade and pass you for the semester. Nahi toh, Thakur toh giyo!

So at the end of my jury, the external member on my jury panel made a statement. He told me: “You have no colour in your life” I was aghast! Me? No colour? He further explained, “All your work revolves around the same shades of pink, purple, blue and green. You need to explore more”. He asked me what I am doing in the holidays and I told them that I would be taking a trek in the Himalayas to Roopkund. He told me, “Go see colours!”

I was of course very happy at that time that jury is over. Not stopping to ponder over his words for a second, I packed my bags for the next day and left for Delhi and further Kathgodam. In Delhi, of course, I met Sudhir ji but that is another post for another day. But it was only on the trek that I understood the meaning of the words said by the external member.

There was colour everywhere there. Colours and combinations that I wouldn’t have placed together before that were laid out in perfect compositions in front of me. Shades of orange and grey juxtaposed with brilliant blues, pale pinks with bright golden browns and whites were around me waiting for me to notice them. Beautiful pink, golden and purple sunsets and sunrises framed the skies every day. The waters were clear blues and greens with rock-white (that’s the name I have given to the shade I saw there) banks with browns hinting from their edges. The names blue, pink, green seemed too simple for these shades. They were ethereal in their nature and I can only hope to one day bring them into my work.

All through the trek certain songs didn’t leave my mind and lips. They may or may not connect to what I wrote for them but in my mind they somehow framed what I saw and felt. This is one of those songs, from the 2014 movie “Hasee Toh Phasee” – a very cute and different love story that came out earlier this year, charming performance by Parineeti Chopra.  This song talks about being drawn towards the love of your life. For me currently my work and studies seem to be the only thing that I can imagine. Even in the Himalayas, everything that I saw, my mind was desperate to convert it into designs and patterns. Not a day went by when I didn’t think of something that wouldn’t have crossed my minds before. Hence this song I guess.

The singing voices are Shafqat Amanat Ali and Nupur Pant while the music composition is by Vishal and Shekhar. Shafqat Amanant Ali is a Pakistani classical singer of the Patiala Gharaana whose other works include “Mitwa” from “Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna” and “Aankhon ke Saagar”.  He is the son of Ustad Amanat Ali, making him the 9th generation of the Patiala Gharaana. Nupur Pant is debuting on the Bollywood scene with this song. She has another song coming up in “Mastram” which is based on Pahadi music. The lyrics are by Amitabh Bhattacharya and the song has been picturised on Parineeti Chopra and Siddharth Malhotra. Parineeti is sister to Priyanka Chopra and is fast becoming an actress to reckon with. Now I will stop as I have rambled long enough.

Enjoy the song.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
—————————————————————-
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 4 # Suresh Rajvanshi -1
——————————————————————-

The journey through the HFGK is  getting more excited and thrilling day by day, though so far I have been able to glance through only the few preliminary years of this decade 1971-1980.  And I am realizing that apart from ‘Bhoole Bisre Geet’ we do also have some ‘Bhoole Bisre Artists’, like the singer of this song that is being presented today.

Many firsts with this post.  This 1971 film titled ‘Iraada’ makes its debut on the blog today.  And so does Suresh Rajvanshi, the singer of this song.  The lyricist, Kafeel Azar, already has three songs posted earlier on the blog. And the music director duo Vithhal- Mumtaz, are also making debut on the blog today. This name is new to me and I do not know much about them. I request our knowledgeable readers/team members to throw more light on these artists.

The film is produced under the banner of Life and Arts, Bombay.  As per information available on HFGK, it is a ‘suspense’ film directed by Rajdeep.  It’s star cast includes Shahida, Sarita, Rajdeep, Iftikhar, Hiralal, Murad, Randhir, Kundan, S.Nazir, P.Kailash, Tun Tun, V.Gopal, Sheikh, Ravindra, Qureshi, Khatri, Master Mushtaq, Satyarani, Dhani, Chandradevi, Shyam, Sanjay, Jwala, Santram, Lipton, Nisaar, Baby Tasneem, Baby Mahzabeen and Rani.  The lyricist for all the four songs is Kafeel Azar.  Credits for music director are shared by Mohammad Shafi and Vitthal-Mumtaz, who have composed two songs each.

As per myswar.com Suresh Rajvanshi has sung in films ‘Pareeksha-1963’,’Paataal Nagri-1963’, ‘Bhakta Prahlad-1965’,‘Noor Mahal-1965’ and ‘Iraadaa-1971’.  I also come across a comment on another blog wherein the reader suggested that Suresh Rajvanshi sung occasionally during the sixties. And this particular song of today was frequently heard on ‘Vividh Bharti’.  And one of the comments on YT mentioned that he has also sung with Surendra Nath (which our knowledgeable readers and team members can throw more light upon).

From the today’s song we can guess that he tried to sing like Rafi Sb and tried to imitate him. The composition is quiet good and it is a pleasure to listen to this song, which must have been forgotten with the film.

From the video of this song I can guess that this song is picturized on Rajdeep and Shaheeda.

Let us now enjoy this beautiful composition…

Song – Chaman Ki Jaan Ho Rangeen Ye Bahaar Ho Tum (Iraada) (1971) Singer – Suresh Rajvanshi, Lyrics – Kafeel Azar, MD – Vitthal – Mumtaz

Lyrics

chaman ki jaan ho

chaman ki jaan ho

chaman ki jaan ho
rangeen ye bahaar ho tum
chaman ki jaan ho
rangeen ye bahaar ho tum
jawaab jiska nahin hai
wo shaahkaar ho tum
chaman ki jaan ho
rangeen ye bahaar ho tum

tumhaari zulf ki
khushboo se raat jhoom uthhe
sitaare raqs kare
kaaynaat jhoom uthhe
kali kali ka
kali kali ka
mehakta hua nikhaar ho tum
chaman ki jaan ho

jahaan e ishq o mohabbat
tumhaare dam se hai
tasavuraat ki jannat
tumhaare dam se hai
mere haseen
mere haseesn khayaalon ka
intezaar ho tum
jawaab jiska nahin hai
wo shaahkaar ho tum
chaman ki jaan ho
rangeen ye bahaar ho tum

tum apne husn ki
raanaaiyaan mujhe de do
jo ho sake to ye
angdaayiyaan mujhe de do
ke meri jaan
ke meri jaan
mera dil mera qaraar ho tum
jawaab jiska nahin hai
wo shaahkaar ho tum
chaman ki jaan ho
rangeen ye bahaar ho tum
chaman ki jaan ho
rangeen ye bahaar ho tum

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
——————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 5 # Mohammed Rafi – 2
———————————————————————–

I am sure that music lovers remember the song ‘Paani Mein Jaley Mera Gora Badan Paani Mein’ – it became quite popular in its time.  But I wonder if folks will remember the name of the film it is from.  It is sung by Suman Kalyanpur and is from a lesser known movie ‘Munim ji’ of 1972. I remember that it was frequently played on the radio in those years (my childhood years  :) ).  And I am wondering it is yet to be posted on this blog.

And, more than that, I wonder if anybody remembers this song that is being presented today and sung by none other than Rafi Sb.

‘Munim ji’ is produced and directed by Jugal Kishore. The list of actors includes Yogita Bali, Anil Dhawan, Ramesh Deo, Jayashree T, Junior Mehmood, Nazir Hussain, Chandrashekhar, Maruti, Leela Mishra, R.Wasti, Shahgul, Mohan Shery, Ranjan, Narmada Shankar, Tulsi, James Bond, Julian, Sudesh amongst others. It also had a fair representation of child artists – Mohit, Parveen Kotak, Naval Kishore, Jameel, Salim, Ali Raza, Balchand, Ravi, and Baby Manisha.

The movie has a total of six songs for which three lyricists, Hasrat Jaipuri and Neeraj share the credits.  The music is composed by Usha Khanna. Amaanullah Khan ‘Aman’ makes a debut on this blog today. As per myswar.com, other than this film he has written one more song in the 1972 film ‘Tanhaai’. I would request knowledgeable readers to share more information about him.

The film ‘Munim ji’ of 1972 also makes its debut on the blog today.  Here is this first song from the movie.  Actually, lyrics of both the song – the one presented today and the other one mentioned at the start of this article, had already been sent in for posting earlier. Today, I present the Rafi Sb song, adding this post, and hope you enjoy this lovely song.

This is a lovely song penned by Amaanullah Khan ‘Aman’. The verses by are really beautiful.  For those who have been in love with someone, sometime. . .

umre rawaan ki raahon mein
ik din aisa aata hai
jab duniya ki ek gali
dil ka watan ban jaati hai

Rafi Sb has rendered it so soulfully under the music direction of Usha Khanna. On screen, the song is performed by Anil Dhawan, as he is wooing Yogita Bali, his lady love in the film.

Just listen and enjoy these beautiful verses…

Song – Ik Chingaari Aankhon Ki Dil Ki Lagan Ban Jaati Hai (Munim ji) (1972) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Amaanullah Khan ‘Aman’, MD – Usha Khanna

Lyrics

ik chingaari aankhon ki
dil ki lagan ban jaati hai
ik chingaari aankhon ki
dil ki lagan ban jaati hai
jab had se badhti hai khizaan
rooh e chaman ban jaati hai
ik chingaari aankhon ki
dil ki lagan ban jaati hai

zikr hamaara chhed ke dekhen
koi unki mehfil mein
zikr hamaara chhed ke dekhen
koi unki mehfil mein
palkein ghunghat karti hai
aankh dulhan ban jaati hai
jab had se badhti hai khizaan
rooh e chaman ban jaati hai
ik chingaari aankhon ki
dil ki lagan ban jaati hai

moti bhi hai pathhar bhi
apni apni koshish hai
moti bhi hai pathhar bhi
apni apni koshish hai
saahil saakit rehta hai
mauj shikan ban jaati hai
jab had se badhti hai khizaan
rooh e chaman ban jaati hai
ik chingaari aankhon ki
dil ki lagan ban jaati hai

umre rawaan ki raahon mein
ik din aisa aata hai
umre rawaan ki raahon mein
ik din aisa aata hai
jab duniya ki ek gali
dil ka watan ban jaati hai
jab had se badhti hai khizaan
rooh e chaman ban jaati hai
ik chingaari aankhon ki
dil ki lagan ban jaati hai

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 15
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

A little over two years ago, we had celebrated the century of this remarkable and versatile artist, as a music director, when I had posted the song “Nanha Sa Dil Deti Hoon Pardesi Preet Nibhaana”.  A peerless master of the classical tradition, whose typecasting in the industry was so intense that he mostly remained confined to B/C grade mythological films for most of his career of nearly five decades.

Remembering SN Tripathi on the anniversary of his passing away (28th March).

Yes, the typecasting was stringent, but he incessantly continued to create superlative melodies the covered a broad spectrum of classical genres – from the songs of pure ragas to the the songs that mixed the folk with the classical to create some superbly lilting tunes that are now part of an un-erasable memory.  Despite being typecast as he was, time and again he continued to baffle his critics and surprise his listener’s with enchanting tunes.  The song “Jhoomti Hai Nazar Jhoomta Hai Pyaar” from film  ‘Hatim Tai’ (1956) became a surprise hit of the year.  In 1960, the ghazals composed by him for the film ‘Laal Qila’ actually set a new trend in ghazal singing.  In 1963, he composed for an unlikely film – ‘Zingaaro’, and dealt out a beauty which he got Suman Kalyanpur to  sing – “Kasak Uthi Mann Mein, Aag Lagi Tan Mein”.

Thaane Kaajario Banaa Loon, Mhaare Nainaa Mein Ramaaye Loon” – from ‘Veer Durgadas’ (1960); “Nain Ka Chain Chura Kar Le Gayi” – from ‘Chandramukhi’ (1960); “O Pawan Veg Se Udne Waale Ghode” – from ‘Jai Chittod’ (1961); “Tu Ne Chhal Kiya. . .” – from ‘Piya Milan Ki Aas’ (1961); “Taaron Ki Thandi Chhainyaan Hum Tum Miley” – from ‘Naag Devta’ (1962); the list of surprise hits simply seems endless.

Today, I present a once very familiar, but now obscure melody from an unfamiliar film ‘Pareeksha’, from 1963.  The film makes its debut on the blog today.  SN Tripathi got Geeta Dutt to sing this remarkable song, that once was quite popular on the radio waves.  The words are from the pen of SR Saaz, a name that I am not very familiar with.  This is as yet the second song by this lyricist to be posted on this blog.

The beauty of this song is that the two ‘antaraas’ (stanzas) are tuned to different melodies.  And the second ‘antaraa’ is a stunning verse of rising crescendo of short, two-three word lines.  The music director has pushed the singer to limits of her high pitch notes, but Geeta Dutt has also held on and rendered the lines beautifully.  A wonderful and a surprising composition.
Listen and enjoy.

Song – Sapnon Mein Aane Waala Aaya Bahaar Ban Kar (Pareeksha) (1963) Singer – Geeta Dutt, Lyrics – SR Saaz, MD – SN Tripathi

Lyrics

sapnon mein aane waala
aaya bahaar ban kar

sapnon mein aane waala
aaya bahaar ban kar

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 16
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Dil Ka Soona Saaz Taraana Dhoondhega” (‘’Ek Naari Do Roop’, 1973) – a song that has become an everlasting signature memory of its creators.  The singing voice of Rafi Sb that instills a restless, discontented pathos into the words of remorse that follows accomplishments.  The words that are written by Asad Bhopali, touch the theme of an unfulfilled genius.  And the music, it comes from the mind of Ganesh, to whom the sentiments and the theme of this song, fit to the very end.

Remembering music director Ganesh on the anniversary of his passing away (28th March).

The name of Ganesh is associated with an illustrious family of musicians.  Son of Ram Prasad Sharma, and younger brother to Pyaarelal Ram Prasad Sharma (of the Laxmikant Pyaarelal duo).  Besides Pyaarelal, his other brothers have reaped fame for themselves in the film and non-film music arenas.

In the beginning of 1960s, the name of Ganesh came to be acknowledged as the key contributor to the success of the music of Laxmikant Pyaarelal.  The effect of this impression in the industry was so strong that by the mid 1960s, he got about 10 assignments as an independent music director, even before a single film with his music had even got to the studio floors.  In 1966, when the films with his music started to appear in theatres, the audiences were swept with the stunning sounds of “Hum Tere Bin Jee Na Sakenge Sanam” (‘Thakur Jarnail Singh’, 1966), “Hum Jahaan Hain Wo Maqaam Husn Aur Ishq Hai” (‘Husn Aur Ishq’, 1966), “Intzaar Ka Aalam Tanhaai Aur Hum” (‘Shera Daku’, 1966) and more.  1967 was no less with songs like “Zulfon Ka Rangeen Saaya Hai Tauba Khudaaya” and “Main Jo Galey lag Jaaungi Tera Badan Jal Jaayega” from ‘Anjaam’, and in 1968 the audiences were treated to songs like “Raja Aana Hamaare Banlge Pe” and “Main To Khadi Re Khadi Re Aankh Ladi Re Ladi Re” from ‘Sab ka Ustad’.

The ingredients of a genius talent at work were all there.  But then all too soon, the realization descended.  There was materially no significant variation between the music that Laxmikant Pyaarelal were becoming successful with, and the attractive music that Ganesh was creating independently.  The rhythms and melody were all there, but the music of Laxmikant-Pyaarelal came out ahead, being the more prolific and savvy music director as a duo.  The work of Ganesh ended up being confined to about fifteen films over a period of about a decade (1966-1975), with one more outing by him in the 1986 film ‘Dozakh’.

The music of his films like ‘Ek Nannhi Munni Ladki Thi’ (1970), ‘Kahin Aar Kahin Paar’ (1971), ‘Shararat’ (1972),  ‘Chalaak’, ‘Dhamkee’, ‘Ek Naari Do Roop’ and ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ in 1973 is enticing, and each film has a few very memorable songs.  And yet, his work as an independent director did not take off with any sustained amount of success.  And he returned to the anonymity of behind the curtain tasks, continuing to assist Laxmikant-Pyaarelal in their films.

He passed away this day in 2000, at a relatively young age of only 58 years.

I present today another memory tickler from the radio listening days.  The film is ‘Ek Nannhi Munni Ladki Thi’ from 1973.  The words are penned by Asad Bhopali and the alluring rendition is by Asha Bhosle.  On screen, the song is performed by Mumtaz, who was then making a transition from under the shadow of stunt films, and onto the mainstream cinema.  I am not able to identify the gentleman who is being wooed on screen by her.  I request other knowledgeable readers and friends to please help identify this actor.

A song that has an entertaining attraction coupled with almost sensuous expressions of love, and is performed so well by Mumtaz. Listen and enjoy.

Atul’s note-With this song, the fifth from the movie, “Ek Nanhi Munni Ladki Thhi”(1970) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
——————————————————————————————–
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 11 # Duet-1 Hemlata, Suresh Wadkar
——————————————————————————————–

For this post I was specially looking for a ‘duet’ and I think this ‘lighthearted’ and ‘typical Ravindra Jain musical’ fits in this series of ‘seventies’ very much.  This one is from the 1978 Film ‘Madhu Maalti’ sung by Suresh Wadkar and Hemlata. Listening to this song reminds us of the popular  “Vrishti Pade Tapor Tupur” from the film ‘Paheli’ (1977), by same team.

It is interesting to note that after ‘Paheli-1977’ there were nine films before ‘Madhu Maalti’ – ‘Raam Bharose’, ‘Safed Haathi’, ‘Shyaam Tere Kitne Naam’, ‘Solah Shukravaar’ (all from 1977) , ‘Aakhri Qasam’, ‘Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se’, ‘Atyaachaar’, ‘Gangaa Saagar’ and ‘Hamaara Sansaar’ (all from 1978) – of which the music was composed by Ravindra Jain, where he does not have Suresh Wadkar as singer.

In ‘Paheli’ (1977) other than the song mentioned above, Hemlata and Suresh Wadkar have one more duet – “O Mitwa, Ek Tere Naa Aane Se”, which is yet to be discussed on the blog. After this, the team came together for only this duet song in ‘Madhu Maalti’.

‘Madhu Maalti’, a social drama film, is directed by Basu Bhattacharya for Chitra Katha, Bombay.  It has Sachin, Sarika, Nadira, Dinesh Thakur, Manik Dutt, Aabha Dhulia, Bharat Bhushan, Sulbha Deshpande, Arvind Deshpande, Parveen Pal, TP Jain, Nandlal Sharma, Madhup Sharma, Dr Gopal Dutt, VM Shah, Gulshan Grover, Jaidev Hattangadi, Kapil Kumar and JS Bansal. Prema Narayan and Benjamin Gilani make ‘guest appearances’ in this movie.

All songs for this movie were written and composed by Ravindra Jain.  Let us now enjoy this beautiful duet song . . .

Not many debuts can be better than starting with the song “Afsaana Likh Rahi Hoon. . .” (‘Dard’, 1947).  His innings lasted for 23 years.  A long time in which he could not even complete a century of films.  He has written about 750 songs in 89 films across his career.  Typecasting, or more correctly to state, pairing groupism was responsible for this state of affairs.  All along his career, his partnership with music directors remained primarily confined to just three – Naushad Sb, Ghulam Mohammed Sb and Ravi.  His films with other music directors are really few and far between.

Remembering Shakeel Badayuni on the anniversary of his passing away today (20th April).

As I checked his filmography, in 62 of his 89 films in all, he is paired with the the three names listed above.  His remaining 27 films are spread across 13 music directors.  And the number of films with each music director – just 1 and 2.  Hemant Kumar is the only music director with whom he worked in three films that were released – ‘Bees Saal Baad’ and ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ in 1962, and ‘Bin Baadal Barsaat’ in 1963.  He also worked with C Ramchandra in three films, however one of them remained unreleased – ‘Zindagi Aur Maut’ (1965), ‘Wahaan Ke Log’ (1967) and ‘Jitne Door Utne Paas’ (UR).

Today I have selected a song of the film ‘Wahaan Ke Log’, wherein he worked with C Ramchandra.  This film makes its debut on the blog today.

The theme of space travel and extra terrestrial life forms is not recent in Hindi films.  One can find such titles as ‘Chaand Ki Duniya’ (1959), ‘Chaand Par Chadhaai’ (1967) etc.  The film ‘Wahaan Ke Log’ also belongs to the same genre.  The film is directed by NA Ansari for the banner Bundelkhand Films. The cast of actors includes Pradeep Kumar, Tanuja, Nilofer, NA Ansari, Shobhna Samarth, Sapru, Johnny Walker, Umadutt, Lakshmichaya, Champak, Shukla, Bela Bose, Anant Tiwari, Lalit Kapoor, Prithvi, Vijay Khote, Latif, Ratan Gaurang, Santosh Virdi, Lamba, Jaggi, Suneel Chakravarty, Pradeep Sharma, Raheem, Raj Malik, Durga Prasad, Maqbool, Hazara Singh, Sheela R, Manmauji, and Khurshid etc.

The film has five songs in all.  All the five songs are prepared by the team of Shakeel Badayuni and C Ramchandra.  The song that I have selected is sung by Mukesh.  And of course, it goes without saying that it is the voice that makes this song extra special.  On screen, the song is performed by Pradeep Kumar, with Tanuja, his lady love, also appearing in the clip, to quietly listen to the expressions of love that are being made for her.

Listen and enjoy.

Song – Hum Tujhse Mohabbat Karke Sanam (Wahaan Ke Log) (1967) Singer – Mukesh, Lyrics – Shakeel Badayuni, MD – C Ramchandra

Lyrics

hum tujhse mohabbat karke sanam
duniya ka fasaana bhool gaye
hum tujhse mohabbat karke sanam
duniya ka fasaana bhool gaye
aankhon se teri ek jam piya
aankhon se teri ek jam piya
phir hosh mein aana bhool gaye
hum tujhse mohabbat karke sanam

jab dekh li teri mast nazar
jab dekh li teri mast nazar
maikhaane ka rasta chhod diya
zulfon pe teri jab aankh padi
saawan ka zamaana bhool gaye
aankhon se teri ek jam piya
aankhon se teri ek jam piya
phir hosh mein aana bhool gaye
hum tujhse mohabbat karke sanam

ae husn teri ulfat ne hamen
ae husn teri ulfat ne hamen
pahuncha diya aisi manzil pe
kadmon pe tere ik sajda kiya
phir sar ko uthaana bhool gaye
aankhon se teri ek jam piya
aankhon se teri ek jam piya
phir hosh mein aana bhool gaye
hum tujhse mohabbat karke sanam

The first lady of Bangla cinema. And the first lady singing superstar of Indian cinema. It is said that at the height of her popularity, she required protection when she was traveling.

Remembering Kanan Devi on the anniversary of her birth today (22nd April). (It is her 99th anniversary)

Her career is a proverbial ‘rags to riches’ story. Her adoptive father passed away when she was not even 10. A family well wisher introduced her in to Maadan Theatres, and in 1926, at an age of 10, she made her debut as a child artist in the silent film ‘Joydeb’. By the time talkies came around in 1931, she easily moved into adult roles, appearing as the leading lady in ‘Jore Baraat’ and ‘Rishir Prem’, both productions of Maadan Theatres.  In 1931, she was just 16 years of age.

It was an era when the society looked down upon the ladies working in the cinema.  In the earlier years, the female roles were played by either the male actors, or the family members of the producer / director or were played by ladies considered to be of lower station in the society. With her grace and persona and hard work, she made a place of respect for herself in the industry and the society. The protection that she required while traveling is already mentioned above. Besides, she is probably the first lady performer of the industry, to be included in social gatherings as an honored guest.

In 1935, when New Theatres was planning for the film ‘Devdas’, both Biren Sircar and PC Barua wanted her for the lead role of Paaro. Unfortunately, at that specific time, Kanan Devi was under contractual obligations of Radha Studios, Calcutta.  But she did join New Theatres immediately after her contract with Radha Studios came to a close.  With New Theatres, she did some of the best films of her career – ‘Mukti’ (1937), ‘Vidyapati’ and ‘Street Singer’ (1938), ‘Jawaani Ki Reet’ (1939),’Abhinetri’ (1940), ‘Lagan’ (1941) and ‘Jawaab’ (1942). When her contract with New Theatres expired in 1942, she decided not to get into contracts with any studios, but continue working as a freelance artist.  In 1949, barely 33 years of age, she launched her own production company – Shrimati Pictures.  Her last Hindi picture was ‘Chandrashekhar’ in 1948, with Ashok Kumar.  She continued to work in Bangla films for another decade or so, and her last Bangla film was ‘Indranath Srikanta-O-Annadadidi’ in 1959.

Today’s selection is a delightful song from the 1939 film ‘Jawaani Ki Reet’. The words are by Aarzoo Lakhnavi and the music is by the renowned RC Boral. The words are a lovely expression of first love,

kis gun se chhipey chhipey
palat diyo kaaya

My being, my existence is transformed,
O what quality of influence
Even when remaining unseen

There is an interesting flow in the music, as the singing in the classical milieu takes a segue into a western rhythm, part way through the song, and finally coming back to rest in the classical fold once again. A handiwork of RC Boral.

A charming sound from way back in 1939.  Listen and enjoy.

Song – Kaun Mann Lubhaaya Kaise Mann Mein Aaya (Jawaani Ki Reet) (1939) Singer – Kanan Devi, Lyrics – Aarzoo lakhnavi, MD – R C Boral

Lyrics

kaun mann lubhaaya

kaun mann lubhaaya
kaise mann mein aaya
jhalki dikhlaaye kar
jhalki dikhlaaye kar

phir bhi nahin paaya
ankhiyan mein aaye kar

kaun mann lubhaaya
kaise mann mein aaya
kaun mann lubhaaya
kaise mann mein aaya

kehat kehat jiya hiya
sab kuchh apnaaye liya
kehat kehat jiya hiya
sab kuchh apnaaye liya
dukh to sukh banaaye diya
sukh ko dukh banaaya
dukh to sukh banaaye diya
sukh ko dukh banaaya

sakhiyon se dil na miley
bhali baat buri lageay

The twinkling eyes and the arresting smile get to your heart when she sings “Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar Laaga Teer e Nazar”. An accomplished dancer, who has the capability to take a song, many levels higher.  Witness that in “Diya Na Bujhe Ri Aaj Hamaara” (‘Mother India’, 1957), “Dagaa Dagaa Wai Wai Wai” (‘Kaali Topi Laal Roomaal’, 1959), “Tera Jalwa Jisne Dekha Wo Tera Ho Gaya” (‘Ujaala’, 1959), “Tera Teer O Bepeer Dil Ke Aaram Paar Hai”, (‘Sharaarat’, 1959), “Madhuban Mein Radhika Naache Re” (‘Kohinoor’, 1960), “Rang Rangeela Saanwra Mohe Mil Gayo Jamna Paar” (‘Baarood’, 1960), “Ab Na Chhupo Re Chhalia” (‘King Kong’, 1962), “Kaanha Jaa Re Teri Murli Ki Dhun” (‘Tel Maalish Boot Polish’, 1962), “Zulmi Hamaare Saanwariya Ho Ram” (‘Mr X In Bombay’, 1964), “Tujhse Wo Neha Lagaaye” (‘Shreeman Funtoosh’, 1965), “Door Kahin Door Hamen Le Chalo Sanam” (‘Ek Sapera Ek Lutera’, 1966), “Main To Khadi Re Khadi Re, Aankh Ladi Re Ladi Re” (‘Sab Ka Ustad’, 1967), “Mera Naam Hai Chameli, Main Hoon Maalan Albeli” (‘Raja Aur Runk’, 1968), and many more.  Once again request Atul ji to create a new category – ‘Kum Kum Dances’.

Greetings to Kum Kum on her birth anniversary today (22nd April).

Yes, takes the entertainment value of a song many notches higher.  That is the ‘abhinaya kala’ that she has mastered as an accomplished Kathak dancer.  Her Guru – the legendary Shambhu Maharaj of Lucknow gharana.  Nothing more to be added for her art, other than to say, take a view of the sampler list of her dance songs given above.  And you will know.  All that she communicates with the minutest of twitching eyebrows, the slight curl of the lips, and the graceful steps across the dance floor.  The performance itself is the statement enough.

She was born Mehru-nisa, in Husainabad in Bihar.  She did her schooling in Benaras and Lucknow, and then trained in Kathak in Lucknow.  Much else is not known about her early life.  She started her career in Hindi films in the early 1950s.  After brief appearances in ‘Aansoo’ (1953) and ‘Mirza Ghalib’ (1954), Guru Dutt gave her an opportunity for a song in his film ‘Aar Paar’ (1954).  The performance caught the attention, and Kum Kum was a busy actress after that.  Her dancing prowess is well documented in the sampler list given above.  She would soon begin to appear in leading roles, well through the better part of 1960s, albeit she was never able to successfully break into the A grade cinema. ‘Bombay by Night’ of 1976, opposite to Sanjeev Kumar, is probably her last film. She got married and left for Saudi Arabia, taking a final bow out of the film industry.  There are references that say she is currently back in India and living a retired life in Bombay.

Today’s song is an off-the-mainstream Hindi cinema, from the Bhojpuri film ‘Ganga Maiya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo’ (1963).  This is the first Bhojpuri film that was made in India.  An interesting anecdote behind its creation.  At an film awards ceremony in late 1950s, the then President of India, Babu Rajendra Prasad, who hails from Bihar, spoke with Nazir Hussain, the renowned character actor, also from Bihar.  The president queries why not make films in Bhojpuri language.  In fact Nazir Sb was already preparing a script for a Bhojpuri film, with this title.  He promised the president that it will happen soon.

Nazir Husain discussed the script with Bimal Roy, but he did not express any great amount of interest in the project.  A later chance meeting with Bishwanath Prasad, a businessman and a film distributor and exhibitor in Bihar, led to a more interested commitment, and the film was launched with financing from the businessman.  The film was completed in 1962.  A special screening was arranged for the President, before the public release.  The film was released to public in 1963.

The title of the film refers to a tradition in Bihar that says, ‘Mother Ganga, I will offer you the auspicious yellow sari’. The word ‘piyari’ represent the yellow sari.  The tradition is that people will pray to Mother Ganges, and place their wish to her, in their prayers.  On the fulfillment of their wishes, they will make an offering the auspicious yellow sari, to Mother Ganges.

The song is a lovely melody that has remained in memory from the radio listening days.  The song is created by Shailendra and the music is by Chitragupt.  The singing voice is that of Lata Mangeshkar.

Ah yes, we have a century celebration today, attached to this song.  Music director Chitragupt completes 300 songs on the blog.  That is a superlative achievement, for an artist who never really got into the grade A cinema. And yet, this number here is a testimony to the quality of his music. The pleasing melodies that are his handiwork have a lasting characteristic that have kept alive his songs in the minds of music lovers.

A superb song that will tug at the heart strings.  The words are simple, and the song is very hummable.  View, listen and enjoy.

Amitabh – The Later Decades – 4
—————————————————–

Almost ‘Lolita’, but not quite so.  In the book, the young nympho is only 12 years old, and the old man is actually a pedophile.  In this Hindi film take off, the young girl is 18, and the old man is not a pervert, but is actually in love. And for all that matters, for all the time it matters, it is a two way love between the girl and the old man.

Around the time this film was relased, a joke was doing the rounds. Q: What is the height of good luck?  A: Amitabh in ‘Nishabd’.

One critic has commented that India and Indian cinema is not yet ready, maybe will never be, for a true ‘Lolita’ story.  But when this variation, ‘inspired’ in parts from the original, is conceptualized, who else but it is Amitabh for this role.  I have not seen this film, yet.  But more I hear and become aware of such films, the more I marvel at the performer behind these performances.  Is it the popular following he has that feeds into the producers mind to create films for him in which he excels?  Or is it his performing capabilities that sustain his popular standing that feeds into the producer’s minds?  Whichever way it works, we are witnessing the rising trajectory of a phenomena; not a super star, not a jubilee hero, but a phenomena, a legend – that continues to surprise with the ease and grace, with which he gets, and he executes, befitting roles.

‘Nishabd’ is a 2007 film by Ram Gopal Verma, who is known more for his films of the horror genre.  In some ways, I believe this film is also exposing a dark side of the human mind.  The music is by Vishal Anand, lyrics are by Munna Dhiman and the singing voice is that of Amitabh himself.
View, listen and enjoy.
